Sidewalk War On Terror - II

I was not ready for what happened last week. My e-mail server was not ready. But ready or not, this column touched a nerve that exploded around the world. Thousands of e-mails came flooding into my mailbox. So much so, in fact, that many folks had to try multiple times to get responses back to me. This week, I want you to sample a tiny bit of the response.

Last week, I told you of my personal encounter with an anti-war protester. The protester was accosting people on the sidewalk of my local supermarket, passing out misinformation and then requesting folks to sign a petition to support impeachment of our president if he moves the War On Terror into its next theater – Iraq. Much of the response was to how I used logic and facts to debunk the protester's efforts and eventually send him to his car. The main tool was the simple question: "When will you hold Saddam Hussein responsible for what he does?" Not having any answer to it, he tired of fighting the fight, hung his head, packed his gear and drove away. I felt a small victory had been accomplished in the war on terror.

The bulk of the responses I received this week were supportive, and a handful very harsh and angry. But the responses that moved me the most were those of our serving men and women of the U.S. military – many of whom are in the Middle East right now. They told me they took the column and forwarded it to every person in their respective units.

This week, with the capture of the man who was the mastermind of both World Trade Center attacks, as well as the attack on the USS Cole; this week with the silly little human shields running for their lives back to the U.S. after they figured out that they really were pawns for Hussein; and this week after the disgusting public school teachers in Maine begin criticizing 7- to 9-year-old students who are the children of many of the men and women serving abroad as "baby-killers" and "children of warmongers," my column will be devoted to hearing from those on the front line.

I wanted to thank you for standing up for us. I'm a 20-year Air Force member currently on temporary duty in the Persian Gulf. Please know that we appreciate people like you who are willing to confront these fools that just don't seem to realize they are aiding an abetting that murderer Hussein with their actions. I don't have any problem with them speaking their minds, demonstrating and the like. What I do have a problem with, is the lengths to which they have gone by doing things like calling our president a terrorist or calling us in the military cowards. Here we are, in the middle of the desert for months now, living in tents and surrounded by fanatics who hate us, and to know that many in the United States can say such things about our leaders or us is really demoralizing. – David, U.S. Air Force

I just wanted to say thanks. Very good story. It seems more and more likely these days that we will face another Vietnam on the home front. Even though people don't agree with the politics, you should support the troops – they are, after all, doing what they are sworn to do. Our overeducated young liberals seem to have almost no convictions other than we are wrong. It almost seems to me that they are all still angry because President Bush won rather than Gore and that these actions are some sort of justification to the non legitimacy of his administration. After 19 years in the military, I don't want to see this war any more than anyone else, but if it's what we have to do, it's what we have to do. – Brett, Tech. Sgt., U.S. Air Force

Thank you for having the courage to face these obscene lies from the blame-America crowd. In addition to the questions you asked, try asking the next "Useful Idiot" why he supports Saddam, a follower of Hitler. Saddam's uncle (who is also his father-in-law) was a big supporter of Hitler in the '30s-'40s. Saddam's Iraq is a manifestation of Hitler's dream for national socialism. Wonder what the "peace activists" would say then? I don't know if you've seen it yet, but the Accuracy In Media website also links these "peace activist" groups to their funding. Surprise, it is the World Workers Party and several other violent socialist movements. – Christopher, Captain, U.S. Army

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm an Air Force officer stationed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We fly sorties day and night, trying to enforce U.N. resolutions, and sometimes it can get pretty frustrating hearing the nonsense some folks are spouting back home. It's great to hear someone using the truth to good effect. Keep up the good work. – Steven, Captain, U.S. Air Force

Those who serve in today's military do so with pride, honor, courage, commitment. The generations that preceded us, those words were duty, honor, country – as Gen. MacArthur so eloquently spoke of in his farewell speech. We understand the terms sacrifice, faithful service to our country, defense of the nation. On a daily basis, many of us risk our lives in training and in actual combat actions. There are also a few politicians that understand the meaning of these words, but thankfully there are those like you in the media who can reach larger audiences. We understand the meaning of teamwork and why we need to fight the battles that our country calls us to perform. Almost two-and-a-half years ago, our country was united and those of us in the military felt proud to serve. People we never met in our lives would come up to us, shake our hand and say "thank you." – Senior Chief Paskewic, U.S. Navy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I read your column and wanted to say "Thank You" for thinking of us in uniform. I've been in the U.S. Air Force for 15 years and am stationed in the U.K. Twelve years ago, I was in the Middle East helping kick Saddam out of Kuwait, we had a clear road to Baghdad, but the wishy-washy U.N. said "No." This President Bush is correct in his will to go it alone if necessary – the people of Iraq must be liberated. When the Iraqis are free, and are shouting their appreciation of President George W. Bush, the peaceniks of the world will slink back into their holes until the next big thing to whine about comes up. – Tech. Sgt. Scott, U.S. Air Force

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is I, ladies and gentlemen, who should be thanking you! After all, the only thing I did was speak up for you – you are the ones defending my freedoms! God Bless YOU! And as you are protecting the lives of the silly human shields who are now running back to America, thank you for having true courage to not be swayed by the danger that lies ahead – the prayers of caring Americans are with you now!
