I searched for the story at Google News and I never could find it. It must be a very new development, otherwise Google News would be carrying articles about it.

Good post. Should be Breaking News. I heard it on MSNBC before I switched to C-SPAN2 to watch the CENTCOM Briefing. For some reason I got the idea it was a Brigade TOC and I heard at least six KIA.

There was a report quite some time ago about an attack on a ?TAC unit of a Marine? group that took a some casualties, maybe two deaths.

Does that make sense to anyone who knows the lingo?

They are probably waiting until they identify all of the casualties, at which point they will scramble to come up with a "helicopter accident" to feed to the media.

I'm only half-kidding about that one.

I heard on the radio that an Iraqi missile hit a TOC of the 2nd Brigade of the Third Infantry Division in South Baghdad. 6 wounded, 4 to 6 missing.

Two Marines die in Iraq today while trying to secure a bridge. I think that was what the news said.

Is that the incident you are thinking of?

I heard about the Marines at the bridge and later the other report, which may have been an explanation, but I'm not sure if they were both referring to the same incident.

What is a TAC unit?

Three things have happened, as far as I can tell.

An armored personnel carrier was struck, killing some, wounding many

A bridge that we are attempting to take and cross was struck. Killing at least one

A command and control center was hit, wounding 6, with 4-6 missing on "initial count."

All in all a somewhat bloody afternoon.

There has been much reporting about the TOC missle hit. Details are sketchy as is usual with U.S. military casualties. They do not wish to worry people.

It was the 3rd brigade however and multiple injuries reported. It happened last night.

Looks like we may be talking about two or more different incidents. As for an Army Brigade TOC, it would be where the Commander (06) might be and it is where his Ops and Intell staff are located. It's the Tactical Operations Center. Could be very disruptive in their sector.

What is a TAC unit?

That is a TOC, or Tactical Operations Center. It is an operational headquarters - in this case (as I have heard it) the headquarters for a brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division. Something like this would consist of several tents and/or headquarters vehicles that are temporarily co-located to provide a command and control center. They move frequently (depending on the tactical situation). Most Brigades that I am aware of would have more than one TOC in operation (usually a forward and a rear) so that one can move while the other runs the battle. The soldiers at the TOC would usually consist of the Brigade staff and, if the commander was not physically present, would be run by the operations officer.
