New York, NY, April 11, 2003As of today, we are saddened to report that Dr. Robert C. Atkins remains gravely ill. He is in a coma and on life support. His physician reports that Dr. Atkins' chances of a meaningful recovery are slim. Nonetheless, we are hoping for a miracle and every measure possible is being considered to save his life.
As many of you already know, early Tuesday morning April 8th, on his daily walk to work, Dr. Atkins fell on the sidewalk outside his office and suffered injuries to his head. The dramatic snowstorm that hit New York City the day before along with the unusually cold temperatures left streets and sidewalks slippery. Dr. Keith Berkowitz, his colleague at The Atkins Center, was arriving at work at the same time and was able to rush Dr. Atkins to Cornell University Medical Center. Dr. Atkins suffered severe head trauma and required surgery.

My neighbor's father fell on ice at Christmas. He was at the mall entrance to return a Christmas present. He died of a head injury. Not to make light of this sad situation, but don't you think we need to pass a law to have to wear helmets when we go out in the winter.
To: PaulJ
I heard about this accident and was very sad. I have been doing his diet since the 2nd of January and have lost 40 lbs. so far.

Thanks doctor for changing the lives of myself and my wife immeasurably for the better.

In Bavaria during the winter, you cannot walk on the sidewalks, the icecicles the melt off are deadly!

You know, I hate to admit it, but this was one of the first things I thought of, too. Kinda tells you something about the times we live in when we start thinking like this, doesn't it?

Damn. It's a shame, this guy has helped a lot of folks (me too). Doubly sad that it happened as a result of a freak snowstorm in April.

Not to make light of this sad situation, but don't you think we need to pass a law to have to wear helmets when we go out in the winter. The accident happened in Spring, your proposal would have to include Spring too. And an early icing over in Fall is not unheard of either, so include it.

Helmets are a first step. But what we need is safer sidewalks including softer concrete and safety rails.

This makes me so sad. Dr. Atkins has helped so many people. I never thought after weighing 198 pounds the day I gave birth to my first son, I would ever see a size 4 again (and I was never a 4 before pregnancy, more like 9/10). I love his diet, and how it makes me feel physically. I think he's awesome.

He has done a lot of good in his life, and probably saved a lot of lives. It took a lot of courage for him to stand off the American medical establishment and work in loneliness for so many years. May God bless him. At least this is a fast easy way to die--one knows nothing. I'm sorry, though.

Considering I live an hour from NYC, I am aware that we have icing in the spring and fall, especially this year. I think all my years of being raised in the South just raised their head. :-) Even the south is having a hard time beating back the freezing weather I hear. We contracted for the exterior of our house to be painted in early fall and there has not been a day that they could come out because of the weather since.

Well NYC has Bloomberg the babysitter... you well see that coming
At any rate, Dr.Atkins helped a lot of people so he has a very GOOD legacy. Anyone who says F---ing DA is great in my book.

The chances of slipping on ice and sustaining injuries are about the same as if you were on a skate board or roller skates, so it's not really that rediculous to think "protective head-gear". Doesn't have to be a law--but just up to the individual. I ofen wonder about wearing helmets in cars (after my daughter sustained horrendous head injuries in a car accident). I'm sure Dr Atkins age is a factor; but it's the brain swelling that's dangerous. I do hope for a miracle. He is much loved for changing so many people's lives.
