Afghanistan Faces Return Of Taliban

Afghanistan faces return of Taliban   By Kate Clark in Kabul   THE TALIBAN have re-emerged in force in Afghanistan, with attacks on American bases and the first direct hit on the headquarters of the international peace-keeping forces in Kabul.

Mullah Dadullah, the first senior member of the Taliban to speak publicly since the movement lost power in 2001, said: 'There has been a gap in our activities but our people have now made contact with each other and are waiting for their commanders and elders to give the order to save our country.'

Dadullah, like most of the Taliban's senior commanders, has so far managed to escape American bullets and custody. The BBC's Rahimullah Yusufzai, who interviewed Dadullah in the Pakistani border city of Peshawer, said: 'The Taliban initially wouldn't talk or meet, but after the first anniversary of the fall of their government they have suddenly become very bold, gaining in confidence.'

Human rights groups have put Dadullah in their top-10 list of Afghan war criminals from the last 20 years whom they would most like to see on trial.

He is infamous for his cunning in battle and his brutality -- even other Taliban are wary of him. Witnesses have described Dadullah shooting prisoners of war and of conducting a scorched-earth policy in the central highlands of Hazarajat during the spring before the Taliban fell.

Afghans in Kabul remain sceptical about the promises President Bush is making to Iraqis, the same promises he made to them of democracy, human rights and reconstruction. The international community gave $1 billion in the past year to help rebuild this shattered country. In contrast, the US gives Israel $3bn every year.

Afghans find it difficult to understand where the aid money has gone, except perhaps in Kabul where they can see large numbers of white Land Cruisers, hikes in property prices and new restaurants.

Pakistan is overflowing with terrorists. We need to pressure thier gov to make a decision about what side they are on. Either they are with us or agin us.

This is a Damn LIE! Kate Clark from BBC is a twisted, liberal, worthless waste of air.... My husband had been in Afghanistan just 20 minutes from Kabul for the last 7 months and has sent me pictures of them helping rebuild some of the schools and taking supplies to them, helping them rebuild and supply some medical centers and the neighborhoods.... my husband is in all of the pictures so I know these things are happening for a fact. Yes they are being attacked by terrorists quite often but they are also helping the Afghan people. The Italian and Thailand military are stationed over there also and are helping them out a lot... but these are all things you just don't hear about in your local "regulated" news, it's a shame..... and thank you all for the heartfelt prayers for our troops in the desert, I send our troops different posts from here all the time, they look forward to reading them everyday, they really love all the support.... Thank you so much everyone

You are exactly right. Not only that, this is not news, it is merely a stringing together of already published reports from others to try and string together a false picture and an agenda.

Notice how The Herald avoids saying how much we have given Afghanistan in just the past year? (The left menu has plenty of information about all we are doing there.)

Are you referring to the $150 million the State Dept. website says we gave Afghanistan? That's hardly impressive out of a total $1 billion.

Yeah, but we could save so much money if we just continue packing Taliban members like sardines into container trucks and letting them bake in the sun. When they scream for air, we can just fire into the side of the truck to make ventilation holes. That's much more cost effective.
