At least one student is dead and three others were injured in a Monday morning shooting at John McDonogh High School, according to New Orleans Police Chief Eddie Compass.

Compass said a sweep of the school was done immediately after the incident and the school was locked down. Social workers were brought in to counsel students about the shooting. The weapon used in the shooting was an AK-47 assault rifle.

Four supects in the shooting are in police custody after officials have cordoned off a nearby neighborhood and search dogs were brought out. One suspect is 19, two are 18 and one is 15-years old.

Sounds more like bloods and crips than ritalin and pimple medication.

Does anyone else wonder why the type of rifle is relevant? Does this reporter really know whether it was an AK47, AKM, AKMS, AKSU, or AK74? Would it have been as interesting to this person had the shooter had an M16, G3, or an FAL?

I'm not trying to pick nits here, I just don't see the relevance.

There must be some pending debates on related legislation (like the AW Ban Renewal?).

They're getting way too predictable.

I very much doubt it. An "assault weapon", as artificially defined by the "Assault Weapons Ban", that is one that fires semi auto only, is much more likely. Still more likely is simple semi-auto carbine that does contain sufficient "evil" features to fit the "assault weapon" legal definition.

Although the Chinese may have smuggled in a number of real assault rifle, that is ones capable of full auto fire, into New Orleans as they did into California.

Must've smuggled the gun in a non-see-thru backpack.

You're probably right. I didn't write the story. I posted it because it's news. Our school kids shouldn't be in that kind of danger, whatever the weapon.

"A gang hit over lucrative drug turf."

Could be. I didn't see that in the story, though.

I live about 10 miles from there. All the gang violence is over drug turf. There are fortunes to be made on illegal drugs and they routinely kill each other over it.

Just too predictable, unfortunately we can probably look forward to more of this as the time comes up to renew the "assault weapon" ban.

The lefties will be screaming bloody murder .. ..

Yet the thousands killed in OK City, TWA 800, the WTC & Pentagon mean nothing..

They will protest going to stop a murdering thug like saddam..
They will protest those whose love for
humanity sends them to a foreign war to save those who cant protect themselves

They will demand the right to murder millions of unborn humans here and have no problem allowing the rape torture murders of children in Iraq without so much as a protest telegram..

These same self styled hypocrites of the lowest order will again blame the firearm rather than demand repsonsibilty from the murderer...

Just in time to renew Brady.

Not Brady, but rather the "Assault Weapons Ban". Brady is the law that mandates the instant criminal background check. It was sold as applying only to handguns, but it the permanent provisions applied to all firearms, by a simple substitution of the word "firearm" for "handgun" which had been used in the "temporary" provisions of the law. A little gun grabber slight of hand.

The Assault Weapons Ban expires on 9/13/2004, unless it's renewed before then. As far as I can tell "Brady" has no sunset provision.

Yup.

What the media and the gun control people will somehow fail to mention is Brady didn't stop this shooting either!

Bookmark the bang_list. This is not a "ping" list (no one maintains a list of interested FReepers). It is a do-it-yourself, see-what's-been-bumped-to-the list. Anyone can bump an article to the list by sending it To: Energy_List Then, interested FReepers can (bookmark and) check the list periodically to see new articles. Please do not ask me to "add you to the list." It doesn't work like that. This is better than a ping list because (1) anyone can bump an article to the list, and any interested parties can see the list of articles 24x7.
