Bomb suspect was Humboldt reporter
BY ADRIEL HAMPTON
Of The Examiner Staff
The San Francisco man arrested in connection with a Molotov cocktail found at an antiwar protest is a former reporter for three Humboldt County newspapers.
Jacob Lehman, 25, reportedly a student at San Francisco State University, wrote articles for the Humboldt State University newspaper The Lumberjack, the Eureka Times-Standard, and The Arcata Eye.
Lehman left his job at the Times-Standard after the newspaper published a substantial apology regarding a story Lehman wrote about a sheriff's deputy's response to a domestic violence call.
After leaving the Times-Standard, Lehman published his own literary magazine.
As recently as November 2000, Lehman was writing stories about medical marijuana raids as the Times-Standard's public safety and law enforcement reporter.
One former coworker told The Examiner that Lehman frightened and offended some colleagues at the newspaper.
"His behavior basically dwells in extremes," the coworker said.
Out of more than 2,300 arrests, Lehman is the only protester now facing felony charges in connection with the demonstrations held in the days following March 19.
He was arrested March 28 in connection with a homemade incendiary device found on Market Street between Third and Fourth streets, said law enforcement officials. A surveillance camera recorded a bearded man and a woman leaving a backpack at the scene during a March 21 protest.
San Francisco police say Lehman ran from the scene, attempted to hide behind a homeless man, and was arrested. After viewing the security tape, police identified Lehman and matched his fingerprints to those found on the explosive device.
Lehman appeared in court April 2. He denied the charges and was released on $200,000 bail.
A sheriff's office source told the Arcata Eye that deputies in Humboldt County were "dancing with delight" at the news of Lehman's arrest.
Lehman's father, Dr. Peter Lehman, is a well-known researcher working on fuel cell technology. The senior Lehman is director of the Schatz Energy Research Center and professor of Environmental Resources Engineering at Humboldt State University in Arcata.
At least three credentialed journalists were arrested while covering the March 20 antiwar demonstrations.
Wire services contributed to this report.

I hear CNN is desperate to "maintain a presence" in 'Frisco. They might be willing to hire this "journalist".

At least three credentialed journalists were arrested while covering the March 20 antiwar demonstrations. The SF Chron reporter interviewing FReepers at a counter protest, was wearing a NO WAR IRAQ badge.

One of his former employers (either the Times Standard or The Eye) ran a story about a week ago that provided a detail about that Sheriff's story he wrote that somehow got left out of the Examiner's version.
The actual retraction which his employer ended up having to run indicated that the story involved an accusation of excessive force being used by deputies, and that the allegation was subsequently discovered to a creation of the reporter's imagination. The story produced quite an outcry and prompted an investigation of a number of wholly innocent deputies.
In leaving that fact out, while reporting on the "circle dance of joy", the Examiner makes it look like the deputies just had some personal animosity toward this guy because of his political positions.
Inadvertent omission, or selective editing?

They're probably just edgy because of fear of discovery for their own bomb factory operations. That, and the usual hatred of media types for law enforcement.

I'll take "Selective Editing" for a $1,000 Alex."

attempted to hide behind a homeless manAnd he was still arrested? Don't the police know that the homeless are the liberal equivalent of sacred ground?

That's kind of funny that he would use that evil gasoline in his molotov cocktails....ironic.
