Catholic Church asks Tom Daschle to stop calling himself a Catholic
Weekly Standard (via Matt Drudge) ^ | April 17, 2003 | SB00

Posted on 04/17/2003 9:36:31 AM PDT by SB00

TOM DASCHLE may no longer call himself a Catholic. The Senate minority leader and the highest ranking Democrat in Washington has been sent a letter by his home diocese of Sioux Falls, sources in South Dakota have told The Weekly Standard, directing him to remove from his congressional biography and campaign documents all references to his standing as a member of the Catholic Church.

This isn't exactly excommunication--which is unnecessary, in any case, since Daschle made himself ineligible for communion almost 20 years ago with his divorce and remarriage to a Washington lobbyist. The directive from Sioux Falls' Bishop Robert Carlson is rather something less than excommunication--and, at the same time, something more: a declaration that Tom Daschle's religious identification constitutes, in technical Catholic vocabulary, a grave public scandal. He was brought up as a Catholic, and he may still be in some sort of genuine mental and spiritual relation to the Church. Who besides his confessor could say? But Daschle's consistent political opposition to Catholic teachings on moral issues--abortion, in particular--has made him such a problem for ordinary churchgoers that the Church must deny him the use of the word "Catholic."

John Thune and FV were both born in Sioux Falls; maybe in the same hospital. lol

I guess this Bishop may be a Thune and Dubya fan. TD's base is starting to crumble and what is at issue here? Family Values.

I recommend www.rapidcityjournal.com (western SD) for SD news in addition to the argusleader which is Eastern SD. The middle of the state is Pierre (I have no info on their newspaper). FV

To forgive is to remove.

Sins are offenses against God. When God forgives sins by His grace, they are removed.

"Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow"

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

And so he does.

There is nothing in the Scripture that says that Christ pretended to remove sins, but really kept them there anyway.

As St. Paul says "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins."

But in point of fact, Christ is risen, our faith is not futile and we are no longer in our sins.

Those who organize themselves into different groups to practice it are organised into what are called denominations.
Peter and the Twelve did not self-organize the basic structure of the Church. Christ Jesus did.

This is huge news and should be under "breaking". This will severely hurt him and it also shows a trend that is growing (Catholic Church outing its CINO politicians).

DITTOS!!!

It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this development in political conservatism. THIS IS MAJOR BREAKING NEWS!

Kewl, re: what you said. I miss Sioux Falls. My mom went to Washington High which I believe is a performing arts hall now. I think Thune can win but he has to run a smarter campaign than vs. Johnson. Being prepared for dirty tricks has to be part of any campaign strategy. Then again, in Florida, we're spoiled by landslides. That's what it takes. Sweep the state!

Our Archbishop James Keleher^ did something similar to our newly elected Governor. Here is the article^ in which he denies her the use of her Parish Church (Across from the Kansas Statehoue) for an "interfaith" service in realation to her innauguration because of her support of abortion. If I can find it, I will post an open letter from our former Archbisop Ignatius Strecker to democrat Catholics regards to abortions well.

Peter and the Twelve did not self-organize the basic structure of the Church.

Thanks

Christ Jesus did.

Cite the scripture which shows this please.
And then explain what it has to do with my statement.

I went to see Dwight Yoakum last night in the Great Hall at Washington Pavillion (HS). It's a beautiful hall and museum.

Yes, Christianity is not simplistic nor does it necessarily follow our logic. That's why we believe it is truly from the Lord! It's not my intention to debate this to death since none of us totally understands these mysteries anyway. But there are many passages that speak to sin being forgiven but not totally forgotten. That's what I was referring to. Peace.

Rev. 20:12: "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. "

Those who organize themselves into different groups to practice it are organised into what are called denominations.

To denominate is to select a name to differentiate yourself from the existing. The Catholic Church has always existed. Other sects have broken away from the Mother Church, having to denominate themselves for distinction.

If there is one river it needs no name. Only when a branch shoots off is there a need to name the offshoot. The original river is still nameless.

In the Gospel of Matthew we read:

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He began asking His disciples, saying, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it." —Matthew 16:13-18

It's freedom of association.

Is that still allowed in this country?

The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books

Careful, some have used this to justify their false teachings of salvation by works ;-)
