Asa Hutchinson Considers Bid for U.S. Senator from Arkansas
C-SPAN, 04-25-03 | 04-25-03 | Theodore R.

Posted on 04/25/2003 5:58:33 PM PDT by Theodore R.

Chuck Todd reported on C-SPAN Friday that Drug Enforcement Administrator and former Rep. Asa Hutchinson, R-AR, is considering a challenge to Sen. Blanche Lambert-Lincoln in the 2004 general election. Hutchinson has just under $200,000 in a political fund from his tenure in Congress (1997-2001), which he can divert to a Senate race. Hutchinson has opened a political account and reported the development to the Federal Election Commission.

It is not clear when he will step down from the DEA to make the race, or if he will follow through. In 1986, Hutchinson, then 35, was soundly defeated in a Senate bid by the popular liberal Sen. Dale Bumpers, D-AR. In 1996, Hutchinson was elected to the House to succeed his brother, former Rep. and Sen. Tim Hutchinson, R-AR, who lost his Senate race to Democrat Mark Pryor in the 2002 general election.

Chuck Todd said that AR Republicans seem to believe that Asa Hutchinson is the strongest candidate that they can recruit to take on Lincoln. Earlier there had been speculation that Governor Mike Huckabee (R) would challenge Lincoln. But were Huckabee to run and win, he would turn over the governorship to the pro-abortion Lt. Gov. Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, cousin of the liberal Senator John D. Rockefeller, IV, D-WV.

According to the Social Security Death Index:

Rockefeller, Winthrop. Date of birth: 01 May 1912. Date of Death: Feb 1973. SSN 461-05-7996. Issued: Texas.

Rockefeller, Jeannette E. DOB: 13 Jul 1918. DOD: 07 Dec 1997. SSN 061-28-5962. Issued: New York.

The Social Security Death Index can be very handy. It's available online and easy to get to via Google. Type in "Social Security Death Index." Ignore the first two matches (registration required) but the next link allows you to search for free. Of course it helps when the name is relatively uncommon.

According to Who's Who he has seven children--Andrea, Katherine, Winthrop Jr., William, Colin, John, Louis. The entry notes only one marriage, to Lisenne Rockefeller (no date of marriage given), so presumably all of the children are of the one marriage.

I did some hunting with Google but could not find anything about Lisenne Rockefeller's background--whether she is from Arkansas or what her maiden name was.

According to the official biography on the Arkansas government site (www.state.ar.us/ltgov/about.html) Win Rockefeller is now the father of 8 children. Another entry, apparently from his initial campaign in 1996, refers to the first three children as "grown"--the third one was then a college student. The others were 9 years and down (Louis was born in April 1996), meaning a gap of at least 9 years between the older and younger children...so perhaps the first three children were from an earlier marriage.

He attends the United Methodist Church--his great-grandfather was famously a Baptist. I don't know anything about his views on abortion...maybe he believes millionaires can afford to raise all the kids they want but poor people have to be given a way out. Wasn't the pro-abortion church the Clintons attended in Washington a United Methodist church?

Was Bobo poor when your mother was her neighbor, or did she mean that Bobo was poor before she married a Rockefeller?

Sorry about the confusion. Bobo was poor before she married Winthrop.

Let me make a correction from my first post. My mother didn't live across the street from Bobo. Rather, my grandfather's butcher shop was near where Bobo's parents lived.

I have a picture of my mother, dated 1924, standing near her father's butcher shop. In the background is a rather drab looking buidling next to a small grocery store.

Whenever my mother showed me the picture, she would always mention that Bobo parents lived in this building. She would tell me about this poor Lithuanian couple that had this beautiful daughter that married a Rockefeller. It sounded like a Cindella story to me,until the divorce.

I've often thought of mailing a copy of this picture to Win Paul. He would be amazed to see a picture of his Sears grandparent's home, so different from his Rockefeller grandparent's home. Of course, I'm not 100% sure of this story, but it would be interesting if it was true.

I also remember my mother saying that after the divorce and a custody fight, Bobo bought her parents a farm, where she lived a quiet life raising Paul.

Of course this is memories from about 45 years ago, hopefully I'm not being gossipy.

"...Winthrop, Sr.'s Lieutenant-Governor, Maurice "Footsie" Britt. Footsie was a war hero (he won the Congressional Medal of Honor for valor in the European theatre, and lost his right arm) and was the first and only GOP Lieutenant-Governor until Win Paul in '96"

Not quite...first and only until HUCKABEE was elected LT GOV.
