Can someone explain why, in those times, an "s" was used in one part of a fentence, and an "f" used in otherf?

It's called a "Long S". It is used at the start of a word and many times in the middle, but never at the end.

I have noticed, as far back as I have found them, that political cartoons were less well drawn but even more vicious than they are now. Political rhetoric was wordier, and with a larger vocabulary, but just as vicious.
