--snip--
Slowly but surely, military officers and U.S. Customs agents are beginning to account for the disparate pieces of a vast museum collection from a land rich in history and artifacts thousands of years old.
And what they have discovered is that far fewer pieces were looted from the museum's collection than initial reports indicated.
--snip--
"Some of the original reports indicated close to 170,000 items were either stolen or destroyed," said Marine Col. Matthew Bogdanos, who heads the investigation. "What we're finding is that the number is significantly smaller, by a factor of at least 100.

The newsprint media (many) lied about this.
They blamed the non-missing "looting" on US troops.
They should retract it... but don't hold your breath.

The media either delibarately lied about this or was fed a deliberate lie by someone (who?). People like you bought into it--big time. I think you owe the military an apology.
Regardless, I'd still like know the origin of the lie.

I think you owe the military an apology.I stand by my previous statements on the matter. I'm very happy that the losses are not as great as previously reported. However, I think war planners should have made sure this museum was secured as soon as we entered Baghdad. Since it wasn't, questions about what was pilfered before we arrived and what was looted or destroyed after we arrived may never be answered.

I heard Brit Hume say more like 17, not 170,000.

The number cited in yesterday's story was 29. Hey, 29, 170,000, what's the difference?
Oh. 169,971. Never mind.

I think it was deadly enough for our troops to free the Iraqi's from Saddam's idiots.
Let the Iraqi's secure their own museums.
