Psst . . . Democrats Debating Tonight

olitical junkies may have been wondering during the Iraq war whatever became of those nine Democrats who went off to run for president? Well, they are still campaigning, even if it is 18 months until the election. What is more, they have an actual debate scheduled tonight in South Carolina that unfortunately seems to be as much a national mystery as whether Saddam Hussein is dead or alive. Sponsored by ABC News, the debate has been embargoed, with no live coverage except - where else? - on a cable channel inside the Washington Beltway, where the campaign ruling class regularly vets reality for the rest of us.

C-Span, the nation's venerable electronic forum, was eager for live coverage for the nonprofessional electorate out here, but it says it had to settle for playbacks beginning Sunday afternoon. Otherwise, 40 or so local ABC outlets and Internet broadcasters are opting to broadcast the debate when it is over, after 11 tonight, while others are not. (Blacked-out New Yorkers can only envy Pocatello and Traverse City tonight.)

The Democrats largely stayed under cover as the president's prestige grew during the war. That tactic only increases their obligation to offer specific issues and proposals rather than platitudes or scene-stealing attacks on their party rivals. The candidates' ideas are awaited on reconstructing Iraq and repairing the wobbly state of international relations left by the Bush administration's initiatives. What can they do about the Republicans as born-again budgeteers who now embrace record deficit spending and the president's serial tax cuts? Will other candidates join Representative Richard Gephardt's call to roll back the president's tax cuts to pay for such needs as universal health insurance? Voters taking the trouble to track down the debaters this weekend are entitled to clear answers.

The shrill evil b*tch from hell doesn't have the patience to wait until an open field in 2008; her lust for power and hatred of President Bush will compel her to take him on in 2004.
