STOCKHOLM, Sweden - It's a bird. It's a plane, but it's not Superman.
At least not in Sweden, where a couple who wanted to name their child after the comic book hero found the law harder to bend than the man of steel himself.
The tax authority, which oversees rules for names in the Scandinavian country of 8.9 million, nixed a request by Sara Lindenger and her live-in boyfriend, Johan Leisten, both 28, to name their child Staalman, Superman in Swedish.
"We wanted to call him David Rune Staalman Leisten," Lindenger told The Associated Press Tuesday. "It would be much worse to be called 'Fantomen' (or the Phantom) or Tarzan."
The authority said it wasn't suitable because it might "lead to discomfort for the person who uses it."
Lindenger and Leisten appealed the decision to the county administrative court in their hometown of Goteborg, 296 miles southwest of Stockholm, but it was denied. They haven't decided whether to appeal.

"While there was a famous Houstonian named Ima Hogg...she had no sister named Ura." Back when I was in high school I knew a Teacher who's name was Mr. Dick and he married a lady named Etta!
I am not making this up!

I know a urologist named Dick plummer. Seriously. As far as I know, he is not married to a proctologist named Fanny.

My husband's proctologist is named Dr. Sunshine.
The proctologist in the student health center at my college was named Dr. Pyle. Given a choice between the two, I think I'd prefer Dr. Sunshine . . . although you can imagine the kidding he gets from everybody.
The Remarkable Names book includes a Dr. and Dr. Doctor (one M.D. married another) and a psychiatrist named Dr. Dotti.

I'm torn between supporting the parents' freedom to bestow their choice of names on their children, and the need to nip in the bud whatever stupidity causes people to do things like you mentioned. Ronald Reagan once said, "Freedom should include the right to be stupid if you want to be."

My "health" teacher (read: sex ed and some other crap cobbled together with it) in HS was Jack Dick. He eventually ran off with a lovely young student. Insert your joke here.

Talking about strange names check this out
http://muetze.net/links/fun/ap-sound.html Recently two wise guys were in Heathrow Airport in London carrying out the following gag: they started to write strange names on a piece of paper and then brought them to the information desk so that they could call out the names of these fictitious people over the public intercom:
