An Amtrak train bound for Miami derailed this morning in Liberty County after hitting a plywood truck at a crossing just outside Hinesville. The collision occurred as the truck was preparing to deliver plywood to a nearby business. Early reports indicate one person was killed and 23 injured. One of those injuries was said to be serious.

The locomotive and all 10 cars of the Silver Star derailed, but remained upright near the intersection of Ga. highways 84 and 196.

Early reports indicate the driver of the truck was killed at the scene. The train's engineer was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

Passengers were transferred to the Liberty Community gym to await transportation to their destinations, said Clifford Black, an Amtrak spokesman.

The wreck occurred at 7:25 a.m., just minutes after the train left Savannah, where it took on two passengers. The train was carrying 150 passengers and 14 crew members.

Black estimated the train was traveling 79 miles per hour, which is the authorized track speed in the area. Amtrak service from New York to Savannah and from Jacksonville to Miami in Florida won’t be disrupted, Black said.

Passengers will be bused between Savannah and Jacksonville.

The auto train between Sanford, Fla., and Lorton, Va., has been cancelled for today while the track is being cleared, Black said.

The Silver Star originated in New York City’s Penn Station at 11 a.m. Monday, and was scheduled to arrive in Miami at 5:20 this afternoon with stops in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh and Savannah.

I am amazed at how low that helicopter seems to be.

Hope the engineer recovers...and glad there were no more serious injuries or deaths.

It certainly could have been much worse. Besides all the passengers on the Amtrak, the picture seems to have been taken from the highway overpass, which at that time of the morning is filled with cars and schoolbuses.

If it had been a long freight train hauling hazardous chemicals, who knows?

I wonder if the truck stalled on the tracks or what.

Wow! When I was a kid (before gates were installed and they used only lights), I saw the aftermath of several train v. vehicle accidents and actually saw the impact of two such accidents take place. Huge mass = huge force. Doesn't seem to happen anymore since we got the gates.

Terrible!

1 dead, 27 injured in Amtrak crash </MCC HEAD>

By Teresa Stepzinski </MCC BYLINE1>
Times-Union staff writer </MCC BYLINE2>

An Amtrak passenger train collided with a cargo truck hauling lumber this morning near Hinesville, killing the truck driver and injuring 27 people on board the train, including the engineer, state troopers said.

The crash occurred about 7:25 a.m. on Castle Road near U.S. 84 and Georgia 196 east of Hinesville, said Gordy Wright, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

"The cargo truck was carrying lumber to a cabinet company when it pulled across the tracks into the path of the train," Wright said.

Authorities said the train was southbound from Savannah to Jacksonville. Amtrak officials could not be reached for comment.

"The train had about 150 people on board," Wright said.

Only one train car derailed, but it remained upright. All the other cars were damaged, Wright said.

The truck driver was killed. He apparently was alone in the vehicle. The train engineer was critically injured and taken to Memorial Health Hospital in Savannah, Wright said.

"A total of 27 people were taken to area hospitals, including the critically injured engineer. Four people had visible injuries and the others received cuts and bruises," Wright said.

The other train passengers were taken by school buses to the Liberty Community Gym in Hinesville, law enforcement officials said.

Wright said Castle Road is a dirt roadway. The railroad crossing is marked with warning signs, but doesn't have crossing arms, Wright said.

The names of the dead and injured were not available.

The collision is being investigated by the state patrol, local police and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Not sure if the truck stalled, if it had trouble seeing the train coming due to the trees near the track, or just thought it could beat it across. The engineer might know if he recovers.

Those are busy tracks, but I think it was a dirt road with no crossing gates where the accident occured.

For the second time in just under a year, an Amtrak passenger train has collided with a truck in our area. It happened around 7:30am near Hinesville in Liberty County, close to the intersection of Highways 84 and 196 East. A Georgia State Patrol spokesman says the train collided with a six-wheeled truck carrying lumber, and the truck driver was killed instantly. More than 30 others of the train's 150 passengers and 14 crew were injured in the accident, including the train's engineer.

WTOC spoke with a representative from CSX Railroad, which owns the track the accident occurred on. He told us that, as they remove cars and debris, they will also begin making repairs to the track. At the same time, they're trying to find what is essentially the train's black box inside the engine room. That should carry all types of information, such as how fast the train was going, whether the engineer sounded the horn to try to warn the truck driver, and they should be able to determine at what point the brakes were applied.

We have learned that the speed limit for trains on this stretch of track is 79 miles per hour.

Crews are  now trying to clean up what is a very tragic mess. The truck was hit at a paved intersection and pushed several yards as it derailed the train. The cars are on either side of the tracks, but did not turn over. Neighbors around the area said the sound was unmistakable.

"Two bangs or something, then two explosions," was how witness Dorothy Wedincamp described it. "When I got to the window, I saw the fire."

Fire crews were at the seen almost immediately to put the fire out. They are working now to find out exactly what happened and why. They're trying to clear the debris and get the train tracks back together.

Injured passengers were taken to area hospitals. Those not injured were taken to the Shuman Recreation Center in Hinesville. Many of them were walking around outside the building this afternoon, evidently doing well physically, though shaken up. Many of them say the crash woke them up out of their sleep.

"It kept rolling," said passenger Iona Lock of Detroit, "and then it twisted us to the right, slung us to the left, twisted us back to the right, and we ended up to the left, and the car tilted. We knew something had gone wrong."

They say they all came together as a family, and just knew it was a miracle after they got off the train and saw the wreckage. They say everyone worked together quickly to get them to their destinations, and are just thankful to be alive. They're waiting on their luggage this afternoon, and they'll be taken on from Hinesville aboard buses.

The wreck is affecting other trains as well. The Amtrak station in Savannah is the final stop now for southbound trains, where passengers are being unloaded and bussed to their final destinations, as no Amtrak trains will be going south of Savannah for the rest of the day. The tracks are closed all the way to Jacksonville.

Passengers say they're happy to be accommodated and feel safe despite today's accident.

"When we were coming up, we were about two hours late," said Robert Bloom of Boca Raton, Florida, whose train arrived in Savannah at 10:40am this morning. "And they attributed it to the expansion of the rails in the heat. So they were observing the speed limit. So, as much as you want to talk about Amtrak, they appeared to be very concerned about safety."

There will also be no trains traveling north to Savannah today. They will all be stopping in Jacksonville.

Crossing gates are very important. When crossing gates were installed in our area, the expense prevented installation at some existing crossings.

Those crossings were simply closed.

So is stopping and looking both ways, crossing gates or not.
