Environmentalists may sue over forest firefighting practices

(Grants Pass-AP) -- A Eugene environmental group says the U-S Forest Service isn't complying with laws on the use of fire retardant to fight wildfires.

Andy Stahl, a spokesman for Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics, says the group is prepared to file a lawsuit on the issue.

The Forest Service uses 15 million gallons of fire retardant in an average year fighting wildfires.

Stahl says some retardant falls into creeks and kills threatened and endangered fish, shellfish and crustaceans.

And he claims the agency hasn't updated retardant-dropping guidelines in light of new studies showing how deadly the compound can be.

A spokesman for the Forest Service says the agency does not comment on pending litigation.

Fire retardant spills have been deadly.

One last summer was blamed for killing 21 fish in Fall River south of Bend.

Another was blamed for killing threatened bull trout near Lake Billy Chinook.

We should use Logic Retardant to fight fires, then, and drop environmentalists on them. After all, human beings are mostly water.

If an environmentalist's home is in the path of a forest fire, let it burn.

Then listen to them howl "We didn't mean OUR property; just the other guy's!"

21 fish.

If the fire crosses into the next watershed and the fuel load is typical, there will be thousands of tons of mud in the streams that will render them lifeless for years.

If the fire crosses into the next watershed and the fuel load is typical,... then they will drop back to the next ridge line and backfire the whole drainage! Dontcha know that there is waaaay more money in burning trees then in growing them :0)

It is yet another reason that proves yer antithesis.
BTW, my office is done an my e-mail is back on!!!

Ashes, ashes, they all fall down! (or burn up)

Honestly, I hadn't thought of that one.
Always a new wrinkle, or should I have said "twist"?
