AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) State auditor Gail Chase plans to tell legislators on Friday that she can't find a paper or electronic trail for $19 million the state received from the federal Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program.

Chase, who is scheduled to appear before the Appropriations Committee, said the problem appears to have developed over five years as the Human Services Department disbursed TANF money for grants or programs for which they were not specifically authorized by the federal government.

Baldacci administration officials are concerned that the accounting problem, which became evident as Chase reviewed the state's books for the fiscal year that ended last June, could jeopardize the state's credit ratings on Wall Street.

How could anything short of a revolution hurt a state's credit rating? They just squeeze the taxpayers for more.

If the state(s) and federal budgets could be run by a stay-at-home wife/mother with five kids we would be out of this GD mess the incompetent bureaucrats have gotten us into in record time. Oh, it would hurt for a while, but we would be fiscally responsible at the end of it. And the affluent Senators don't want to "allow" us to keep more of our money. (I need more coffee!)

Yes right. And did he take the art worth with him that cost taxpayers $170,000 that was slated for the State House????

The lawmakers are trying to shut down the state of Maine, I am convinced of it. Probably working behind closed doors to give this state to Canada.

Sounds like your rats in charge of fleecing the taxpayers of Maine and those of us who pay federal taxes have Enroned Maine.

The left wing facist criminals in charge of Rat controlled states do nothing when their states are Enroned.

The left wind mediots protect them. So nothing is done.

What will eventually save Maine and my state of Kalifornicator with the same problems, is that Wall Street will take over the budget process like it did with NYC.

They will bring real auditors and investigators. The FBI and Dept of Justice will get involved. Eventually the pocket of pus will be lanced.

Looks like Maine has a similiar problem with the maggot infested left wingers via phoney non profits and the state rats "losing" a lot of tax payer money.

''It's not that it has gone out in anyone's purse or in anyone's pocket,'' Chase said. ''The problem is when you can't tell, and when the department can't tell you, exactly which grants (go with) which expenditures, with which dollars.''

Gail Chase is a lying piece of dog feces.
The money was stolen by the politicians and their cronies.
I mean, freakin' duh.

I hope Bush has the guts to send in the FBI and put Chase and the rest of the garbage behind bars.

Hopefully, With GWB in there, these problems may get fixed...If it were the Clintoons, they would ask "Where's our Cut?"...so common in many crime families.

The phoney non profits need to be addressed by Congress in 2005.

First of all, the NP's must be banned from donating to any politicians or polictical party. Make it a crime if any NP is caught doing this. Try and sentence the CEO's/CFO's and board members using non profit money, facilities, personnel or assets for political reason. Then set up real clear and transparent auditing of all NP's re money, who is giving, and where it goes. That will minimize what has happened in Maine.

To do this we need 60 senators to bypass the rats who are addicted to the political money they get from non profits.

This is a problem for congress to handle. GW can't legally do it. He can use his bully pulpit to set the stage and push for reforms.

In the meantime we have to watch our various rat controlled states become insolvent and hope that Wall Street takes over the budgets, writing the checks and audits.
