Nicotine Nic (Kidman in trouble over public smoking)

Nicotine Nic

May 22, 2003

HER face has graced the covers of hundreds of fashion magazines worldwide and she is regularly voted one of the most beautiful women.

But the world glimpsed uglier images of Nicole Kidman at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday when she smoked her way through an international press conference.

Her actions have outraged health lobbyists and anti-smoking advocates, who described it as "priceless publicity for the tobacco industry".

Australian Democrats Senator Lyn Allison also weighed in on the issue, urging Kidman to use her position to discourage smoking.

In doing so, Senator Allison added that tobacco use cost the nation $21 billion every year.

Reports from Cannes suggest Kidman was in an "upbeat mood" at the press conference to promote her new film, the widely-acclaimed Dogville, though she "admitted she was not in form at one point (and) pushed the microphone away."

The Toronto Sun reported that her decision to ask Swedish actor and Dogville co-star Stellan Skarsgard for a cigarette was met with disgust by director Lars von Trier, who was being interviewed about the same film.

"The smoking prompted the irascible von Trier to lecture her on her bad habits," the newspaper said.

"'Nicole,' he barked, 'Don't do that - you promised!' Kidman then scowled angrily like a naughty child. 'Okay,' von Trier said angrily, 'You can sulk now'."

This is the first time she has given a press conference while smoking, although she has previously spoken about having to take up the habit, and learn to roll cigarettes for her Oscar-winning role in The Hours.

The NSW Cancer Council was yesterday "reluctant to comment on individual cases", Kidman's actions were strongly condemned by Action on Smoking and Health Australia (ASH).

The group said pictures of her smoking were "devastating" for young women and girls who might be influenced by them.

ASH CEO Anne Jones said 6000 Australian women died each year from smoking-related illnesses and 21 per cent of women over 18 smoke.

"Nicole Kidman might feel she's been unfairly targeted, but with fame and status does come responsibility," she said.

"She has a right to smoke, but when she, (or any celebrity) smokes at an international media conference, it will be seen by millions of people and it sends a very unfortunate message, especially to young women and children."

This story is breaking big all over the entertainment world. There is another one on FR as it is: Smoking Kidman Sparks Controversy

I posted this one because the vitriol was incredible:

You'd have thought she stuck a needle in her arm and shot up!

Anyhow, I was floored when I saw the footage on Entertainment Tonight of her lighting up two nights ago because candid images of stars smoking aren't normally aired (and ET made no mention of it).

I've scoured the net for images from the Cannes press conference of her smoking but to no avail. All the photos I can find of Kidman either show her smoking in movie roles or *not* smoking in public.

Anyhow, give those niconazinannies hell Nicole!

She can smoke if she wants, but her stock just took a nose dive in the BoT beauty index.

Maybe Nicole should be like Charles Barkley and inform people that she isn't a role model simply because she's pretty and in movies.

She can do whatever she wants to do.

However, if she got up and blabbed about having an abortion, she would be called a role model.

I'd rather they smoke than talk.

"You'd have thought she stuck a needle in her arm and shot up!"

That would have been more acceptable.

And these single neuron primitives wonder why we disdain the whole Hollyweird culture.

It is a badge among the Hollywood types to have a diploma from the Betty Ford clinic. They live together for years without getting married. They have children out of wedlock. They "discover" their latent homosexuality, then undiscover it... and they get upset over smoking???

It would have been alright for her to have stuck a needle in her arm. To these clowns(I know I am insulting clowns) drug use is alright but smoking is on the same level as we common folk have guns, it just shouldn't be. Unless you are smoking a real Cuba cigar, it which case you are only doing it to support their comrade fidel

The percentage of actresses who smoke in real life is quite large. Nicole is in trouble because she did so at a press conference.

FYI, check out the Female Celebrity Smoking List. It is an interesting site.

BTW, Nicole prefers Marlboros.
