We, as a culture, would not allow, say, people to cook sauerkraut outside every door.

Why wouldn't we?

The smokers have been driven out of doors. Smoking tobacco is legal for adults in all 50 states.
What other legal activity is taxed as much, legislated as much, lied about as much as smoking.

There is no hard fast scientific proof that second hand smoke (ETS) is a health hazard to anyone that doesn't have a pre-existing health condition. So all it comes down to is smell.
Some people don't like it, some people do. The anti-smokers don't like it, lie about the health consequences of ETS, and get legislatures to ban smoking in private establishments all on the basis of lies, more lies, and damn lies.

Roman Polanski can drug and rape a little girl and he's a cinematic icon, showered with awards and honors.

Robert Blake can blow his wife's brains out and the left is deafeningly quiet.

Alex Baldwin can call for the assasination of a US Congressman and his family and the left stands on their chairs to applaud him.

But Nicole Kidman has a cigarette and everybody's ready to string her up.

No kidding!

I was able to find variations of this story in no less than six (and certainly growing) on-line newspapers.

I love the outrage that the health nazis are putting themselves through over this. Their wailing and gnashing of teeth is music to my ears!

Yep!

I'd be sitting in front of the cameras, chain-smoking Marlboros, drinking a beer and eating veal.

My fur coat (tacky, yes I know) would not conceal the "I'm the NRA" t-shirt under it. Finally, I'd leave in a SUV with an "Islam=Terrorism" bumpersticker on the back.

If they were allowed to smoke indoors your problem would be solved. Seems like it's the law of unintended consequences...

Yes! Id say it's more
to do with people's basic
stupidity than

anything else. When
stupid people try to "fix"
things EVERYONE pays...

And the funny thing is that who is Nicole Kidman a role model for? The young girls might take up smoking in the future? These girls look at the nearly 36-year-old Kidman as "old."

C'mon, it isn't like it was Britney Spears or the Olsen Twins lighting up at a press conference.

Nicole's fanbase has been old enough to buy smokes for several years.

I wonder what the reaction would be had she lit up a joint and said..."Oh, it's ok...I don't inhale..."
