Michelob Ultra is a very low carb beer. It has about 2.6 grams of carbs per bottle, which is a new low. Miller Lite used to be lowest at over 4 grams.
Ultra tastes like Bud Light. I don't know if its available everywhere yet. It's a new product, but it seems to sell very fast in NJ.

My concern was blood sugar going too low. I have never seen in medical reports on the diabetic effects.
I have tried this diet with sucess because I could live on meat alone.

I have gout and am also on the Atkins diet. As long as I take my medcine my gout is under control and I still have been able to lose a lot of weight.

I'm down 12 lbs. in 12 days, and yes, the urge to have a cold one is overwhelming. I finish the induction phase tomorrow, and just in time for Memorial Day weekend. I just thank my lucky stars for Michelob Ultra.
Like most, I still crave doughnuts, bread, pasta, and most of all cheesecake, but I'm making good progress, and I don't want to screw it up. I think I'm about 2 weeks away form taking a day and carbin' out though!!

The people I have known personally who had long term success have a. Took up a permanent activity/exercise program. b. Changed their eating habits (and these have varied pretty much from person to person). c. Allowed themselves to eat most foods they enjoyed, just in moderation the 'bad' foods. This makes sense. I believe the secret is called "self-control" or even "self-discipline".
Not pointing fingers here.....goodness knows, I've done my share of the yo-yo routine over the years. Of course, in my case, it's only been because of having babies. LOL

My concern was blood sugar going too low. That's really what I was saying, it eliminates the spikes, and the valleys. The valleys are a bitch. Your sugar crashes fairly rapidly and you feel the symptoms.

Kudos to you, Maven! Awesome testimony.
You've got the trump card in this discussion, that's for sure.

Anyone, what is the limit in carbs. starting out? Can I use those prepacked salads? I looked at Atkins years ago and do not remember much about it. This week we had a death in the family and I had to go out and buy a black dress because mothing I had fit. Both the death and nothing that fit were a wake up call. Is there a web site anywhere that can get me started until I can get the Atkins book for more info.? Thanks!
To: Maven
Wow! Good for you Maven! I bet you feel fantastic now.

Anyone, what is the limit in carbs. starting out? Can I use those prepacked salads? Your limit during the induction phase is 20 grams a day, vs the 300 grams recommended by the Archer Daniels Midland Food Pyramid (tm). After a couple of weeks at this level, you start adding back 5 grams of carbs a day each week until you stop losing weight. Then, just jump back below that level a bit until you reach your goal weight, and use that level as a dietary target from then on.

Is there a web site anywhere that can get me started until I can get the Atkins book for more info.? I'm sure it's not sufficient in itself, but the most concise statement I've seen anywhere is at this site. I've invited more knowledgeable/experienced types here to evaluate it, but haven't heard anything yet.

Thank you! That info. will get me started. :)

BTW, akin to your post, can you say induction is 20 carbs a day, continued loss is ___ carbs a day, maintenance is ___ carbs a day? Do you know those figures offhand?

Induction is 20. Ongoing weight loss is from 25 to wherever you stop losing - i.e., people with fast metabolisms might be able to eat 100 grams and still lose weight, others may top out at 35 or 40. Then maintenance is just whatever keeps you at you goal weight. Some people are stuck eating 40 or less forever - life isn't fair.
I've basically stopped adding carbs at about 30-35 a day, because I still have 25 pounds or so to lose. When I get down near my goal, I'll add more to stop losing.

It would be interesting to know how these people would have fared on any other kind of diet. Those who want the "quick fix" of a rapid weight loss without changing their long-term eating habits will inevitably regain much or most of their weight when they go back to eating indiscriminately. The data here must be very squishy. I'm guessing that the people being studied picked up prepared meals once a day. Considering that they were very overweight to begin with, they probably had worse-than-normal eating habits and "cheated" regularly. This would skew the results for both "sides" equally, however, still showing that Atkins is more effective than a low-fat diet. If these people had really done "induction" for six months, they all would have lost more than 50 lbs. easily.
Also, Atkins is very easy to stay on, especially in comparison to a low-fat diet. I can testify from personal experience. Atkins kills cravings.

I eat an Atkin's diet for lunch only. I'm not trying to lose weight but to avoid that horrible sleepy, sluggish feeling I get in the afternoon. It works. Why not feel good all the time? I used to get that, and then I was completely useless at work for the last hour or two. After dinner I was again exhausted, and could barely stay awake until I put the kids to bed at 8.
Since starting the diet, I'm up at 5 and go to bed at 10 or 11, averaging 6 or 7 hours/night. I'd prefer 8. Anyway, I have energy to burn until about 9.
Last weekend I spent the day building a rock retaining wall by myself, played a couple of hours of b-ball and was up at 6 the next morning feeling great. Life is good, and the food tastes great!
