Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, widely considered a top contender to succeed Pope John Paul II, angered students and faculty at Georgetown University with an antigay remark he made during a commencement speech delivered May 17. A letter protesting his speech and signed by about 70 faculty members at the Jesuit university was delivered Wednesday to Jane McAuliffe, dean of the university's school of arts and sciences, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
McAuliffe, a specialist in Islamic studies, invited Arinze, who is president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, to speak on Christian-Muslim relations at the school's graduation ceremonies. Instead, the Nigerian prelate told the graduates that happiness is found not in the pursuit of material wealth or pleasures of the flesh but by fervently adhering to religious beliefs. Arinze then spoke of the importance of family to the Roman Catholic Church. "In many parts of the world, the family is under siege," Arinze reportedly said. "It is opposed by an antilife mentality as is seen in contraception, abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. It is scorned and banalized by pornography, desecrated by fornication and adultery, mocked by homosexuality, sabotaged by irregular unions, and cut in two by divorce." Some students and at least one faculty member got up and left the ceremony following Arinze's comments.

Sad when a Cardinal can't talk about Catholic values at a Catholic University ... Seems to be rampant this year...i.e., St Joseph's last Sunday and the treatment of Sen. Santorum!

The Cardinal sounds as though he believes what a Pope is supposed to believe. The people who left just don't like to hear the truth.

He would make an excellent Pope IMO.

Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria I had the opportunity to meet the Cardinal five years ago in Chicago. A wonderful man who would indeed make an excellent Pope.

Sad when a Cardinal can't talk about Catholic values at a Catholic University ...Got that right. When my wife graduated from there several years ago the speaker was Ellenor Holmes Norton, what a breath of fresh air the Cardinal would have been.

"specialist in diaperhead studies" Not a surprising quote with a name like Bedford Forrest, were you wearing your sheet at the time?

Jesus, Mary and Joseph! How refreshing the words and beliefs of this Cardinal. He will make a fine Pope!
Ditto your remarks!

The next pope will be challenged like no other pope. Let's get a bit more information about this Arinze before elevating him to follow Peter. Does he possess everything that will be needed to oversee and manage the rebirth of the Church?

I am Catholic and he has my vote. Time to start praying that JPII becomes a saint and this man takes over. Our church is falling apart by lacking family values. The Cleveland website with the Gay ministry, takes the cake. I feel this man will right the wrongs that have been done.
God Bless him!!!

Amen to the good Cardinal...what is really sad is that those those have apparently devoted their lives to the faith don't believe in its very teachings...how could anyone ordained to the priesthood object to the statements made by the Cardinal.

Does he possess everything that will be needed to oversee and manage the rebirth of the Church? He's one of the best for the job. He will be criticized by rigid traditionalists because of his ecumenism, otherwise he has no liabilities I can see.

He who enters the conclave as Pope comes out as a cardinal.

What is interesting is that he took the topic of inter-faith relations and, in essence, said look to your own conduct and values.
If he had went into values equal in the various religions or other coequal type remarks, today's nominalists would have stood up and cheered. But, when asked to consider our own values, they take it as an insult to their "situational ethics."

I'm sorry, my five year old is home sick today and my neurons are not firing, can you tell me what this means? Are you saying that the one who is most favored never gets to be Pope?

What they might not have got is the implication that Muslims agree with HIM on these matters and are little impressed by all the "Abrahamic" crap they hear from Christians trying to suck up to them. Yeah, Muslims use this jargon, but for this it is simply a matter of gaining rhgetorical equality with the Christian majority in this country, and they know that liberals have as little respect for Christianity as they do.

Are you saying that the one who is most favored never gets to be Pope? Over time, I think this has has been the case, although if you look at Pius XII and Paul VI, these two were favored going and were elected.
John XXIII, John Paul I, and John Paul II were total surprises.
