The Alliance for Justice Needs Your Help to Oppose the Nomination of Bill Pryor to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit!

On Wednesday, June 11th, the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin the nomination hearing for Bill Pryor to the U.S. Court of Appeals to the 11th Circuit. Pryor has championed the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, and fought against reasonable regulation of gun purchases.

Bill Pryor received the National Rifle Association's 2001 Harlon B. Carter Legislative Achievement Award. At its award presentation ceremony, the NRA congratulated Pryor for fighting "frivolous" lawsuits against the gun industry, "[defending] the Second Amendment in the courts," helping to draft Alabama laws that immunized the gun industry from municipal lawsuits, and repealing the two-day waiting period for handgun purchases. Upon receipt of the NRA's award, Pryor said: "In a republic that promotes a free society, as opposed to a police state, one of the basic organizing principles is that individuals have a right of self-defense and a right to acquire the means for that defense."

Pryor has sharply criticized lawsuits against the gun industry. At a 1999 news conference of the American Shooting Sports Council, Pryor said: "These types of lawsuits threaten the entire business community. The free market and the cause of human liberty cannot survive much more of this litigation madness...[gun suits] are a clear and present danger to the rule of law in our nation."

We need your assistance over the course of the next few days to call and/or e-mail members of the Senate Judiciary Committee OPPOSING the nomination of Bill Pryor. Gun control and gun safety groups that have diligently been working to stop gun industry immunity should help to oppose Bill Pryor for his support of the gun industry and the NRA. The NRA clearly favors such a judge being placed on the federal bench.

For a comprehensive review of Pryor's record, please go to independentjudiciary.com.

For more information, please contact Kristin Becker at the Alliance for Justice at 202-822-6070 x292 (kbecker@afj.org).

PLEASE CALL AND/OR E-MAIL SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS AND OPPOSE THE NOMINATION OF BILL PRYOR TO THE FEDERAL COURT.

Grassley, Kohl and Sphincter Specter are the only ones to worry about. All the other gun-grabbers (Feinstein, Schumer, Leahy etc) are a lost cause, and all the good guys (Kyl, Cornyn [who is my guy], etc) will vote to confirm him quickly.

What is Specter's record on gun control? I read a posting from the other site that Schumer has recommended 5 people to Bush for nominees to the USSC one was Specter. It must be anti 2nd amendment.

I believe Specter has a mixed record. I don't know his AW ban vote, nor Brady vote, but he did vote AGAINST the gun show ban, and voted to ban gun lawsuits.

He's worse on the abortion votes, than the 2a votes, but I can't really count on him.

Pretty slick of Schumer: Specter is a huge pro-abort and so old that Hillary! would get to replace him in 5 years or so.

Pryor has championed the Second Amendment rights of gun owners,...

Somebody at JTO is going to get fired for using that phrase. Usually they won't admit that there is any such thing as Second Ammendment rights for individuals.

Pryor said: "In a republic that promotes a free society, as opposed to a police state, one of the basic organizing principles is that individuals have a right of self-defense and a right to acquire the means for that defense."

Aristotle figured it out and even Plato was coming over to our side a little. What's so hard about this concept that thousands of years later they still can't get it through their heads. If only the Government has the weapons tyranny always follows. Maybe it takes a decade and maybe it takes a century. But it always follows.

Pryor is about as good as Alabama can offer this great nation.

Not only is he a pro-gun-rights American, but it was his election law case victory during a contested Alabama contest that set the precedent used by the SCOTUS in Bush v Gore back during the 2000 election madness.

He's an ethical, principled man.

Young, too. He's clearly SCOTUS material in the future (say, next 6 years).

Oh, did anyone notice that 4 SCOTUS Justices will be too old to make it past the end of a 2nd GWB term?!

Yup. One of my favorites. The liberals are all over his butt too.

I had to go over this letter twice, because I thought at first that it was a letter FOR his nomination.

Pryor has championed the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, and fought against reasonable regulation of gun purchases.

And this bad? EXACTLY how is this bad?

Bill Pryor received the National Rifle Association's 2001 Harlon B. Carter Legislative Achievement Award.

Cool, this is my kind of judge!!

"In a republic that promotes a free society, as opposed to a police state, one of the basic organizing principles is that individuals have a right of self-defense and a right to acquire the means for that defense."

And this is bad, exactly how?

Pryor has sharply criticized lawsuits against the gun industry. At a 1999 news conference of the American Shooting Sports Council, Pryor said: "These types of lawsuits threaten the entire business community. The free market and the cause of human liberty cannot survive much more of this litigation madness...[gun suits] are a clear and present danger to the rule of law in our nation."

Again, and this is bad? And how can this be bad?

Pryor for his support of the gun industry and the NRA. The NRA clearly favors such a judge being placed on the federal bench.

I swear, I thought at first that this was a PRO-Pryor letter. Whomever wrote this letter needs to find a job with the progun lobby.

with the Supremes set to decide campaign finance reform in Sept, it seems likely that NO justices will step down before the election. I don't know if that is good or bad, probably good for Bush. Stevens and Ginsburg might have trouble waiting out another Bush term. O'Connor and Rehnquist would definitey retire.
