Our little 13 month old daughter, one of a set of twins, has been diagnosed with something called Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disorder that leads to varying degrees of mental retardation accompanied by lack of speech and poor motor coordination.

I know there are many Godly believers on this site; I am a born-again Christian. Please help me lift my little girl into the Lord's presence and healing hands.

Common indications for testing for Prader Willi (PW) and Angelman Syndrome (AS) genetic testing:

Rule out Common features include:

PW- severe hypotonia and feeding difficulties in early infancy, followed in later infancy by excessive eating, causing parents to have to lock cabinets and the refrigerator. Gradual development of morbid obesity, unless externally controlled. All have some degree of cognitive impairment. Hypogonadism is present in both males and females. Short stature is common.

AS- Newborns typically are normal. The clinical features of AS do not become manifest until after one year of age, and may take several years before the correct clinical diagnosis is obvious. Severe developmental delay or mental retardation; speech impairment; gait ataxia and/or tremor of the limbs; and behavior with an inappropriate happy demeanor that includes frequent laughing, smiling, and excitability. Microcephaly and seizures are common.

Family history. This is much more rare. These disorders are caused by a number of genetic mechanisms (see below). Familial recurrence is rare. If more than one sibling has the same disorder (PW or AS), it is possible that a parent has gonadal mosaicism or is a balanced translocation carrier, involving chromosome 15.

Matthew 18:10 "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven."

As your Word says, your child is always before your precious Presence. To not ask for your help would be to despise your handiwork. Give us the peace and assurance that your will shall be done and likewise, mold us into your image.

Her name is Victoria Mae.

God bless all of you. I am strengthened this morning by this response. My wife and I are learning more by the hour. At one time this was called "happy puppet" syndrome because the child is constantly happy but because of jerky movements due to poor motor control, they resemble puppets or marionettes. We are devastated but I also know that the same Lord who restores eyesight and raises the dead can restore a few missing genes.
