Yep, and like you I'm sick and tired of it. Let's never forget the lesson we learned in 2000 people: we ARE the majority, and a tiny portion of the population weilds a disproportionate amount of power over us. They constantly gray out all morality until no one knows what to believe in anymore....and then they pounce on the resulting weakness and indecision. Thank God for the internet! But the lawmakers are working their butts off trying to figure out how they can stop the sale of tobacco products over the net. Well, I say they better start knocking down the porn sites first. What's worse for the children....smoking or porn sites?

I was stationed at Brunswick NAS until 2000. Hate to say it, SheLion, but the normally-sensible Mainers (and my wife is a PERFECT example of that great type of person) got royally SUCKERED back a few years when the imported Leftist voters from "away" convinced them that the ban on RESTAURANT smoking was "all they wanted" and would never, never apply to BARS.

This type of "step-by-step" banning is becoming "the weapon of choice" of the ninny-nannys out there. A similar smoking ban has just made it through Florida's zoo of a legislature (mostly on the influence of retired folk from up North), seat-belt laws which were never supposed to be a primary-stop offense are now enforced by roadblocks, of all things, and the issue of firearms rights should serve as an object lesson for the entire country. SUV's? Take a look at all those wonderful modern, late-model musclecars with huge engines Detroit puts out...oh, wait...

We should regard with EXTREME SUSPICION all proposed legislation which:

1. Claims to be "good for us";

2. Uses, in any way, "The Children" as its hook;

3. Promises, From The Bottom Of Its Heart, to NEVER ask for more.

We SHOULD all have had ENOUGH lessons in this.

It depends on how a lawmaker feels about the subject. If they hate something personally, they will try to ban it.

Or, if there is enough money in it for him under the table, then banning everything becomes quite lucrative. You know how "money talks."

(argh, reading this smoking threads makes me insanely angry...and I want to *quit*, too, is the worst part...I half smoke out of spite these days...good to hear we have Dennis Miller on our side, and don't forget Timothy Leary's last arrest was for...somebody already mentioned it...civil disobedience regarding smoking -- he lit up in an airport to protest the "demonization of smokers", they threw him in jail...this can cut across party lines...)

SCOTUS will not touch this, unfortunately. States rights, and all that. Which is why it's heartening to see pols starting to get shaken on this issue...with 30% of the population smoking, we can sure as hell toss one or two of these guys out, and then every other pol for the next decade will *know they can lose on this issue* -- and that will be enough to make them not put it on the agenda. Gonna screech about that and screech about that even as we get some people moving in the legislature. Romney sure as heck ain't gonna help us down here in MA -- dumb frickin' Mormon decides his first move will be to attack, head-on, Billy Bulger. *Smart*, Mitt, *smart*.
