[history]
If the Earth's climate continues to warm up as predicted, some crab species along the Pacific coast may face extinction. A study shows that small crabs that live just off the beach in warmer waters have little tolerance for rising temperatures. Jonathon H. Stillman, a marine biologist at Stanford University, tested the heat tolerance of four species of crabs found in the shallow waters of the Pacific Ocean and reports his findings this week in the journal Science.

OK, let's see if I got this experiment right. They warm up the aquarium 1/5th degree per minute until the crab dies, then extrapolate from that what will happen if there's a 4 to 6 degree rise in 100 years? 5 minutes to go up a degree in the lab is the same as (at best) 16 years to go up a degree? And the number of crab generations in 16 years is...? And the likelyhood that a percentage of the little baby crabs that didn't grow to adulthood under current conditions were crabs that didn't like it because it was too COLD!!!!!!??????
This is like "discovering" that cyclamates caused cancer based on force feeding lab rats the equivelant of 1000 cans of soda per hour. You overdo oxygen in that kind of ratio and you're going to cause some nasty reaction, probably cancer. This is designer science. Decide what result you want then jury rig your experiment to produce that result. I betcha they got more goverment funding after publishing this.

It'd be at least as accurate and edifying as some of the junk coming from the scientific community.

Sure 'nough. Ain't a thing wron with them either. The Hudson is much cleaner than most people think, and it has a small fishing industry.

This experiment was scientifically flawed.

This is one crab who refuses to feel threatened.

Above the TZ bridge. I have friends who fish the Hudson regularly. OK, that's not so bad. I had a buddy fall off my boat into NYC harbor last summer. When we pulled him out, he smelled TERRIBLE. The lower Hudson may be cleaner but it's still plenty gross.

Are they edible ? If not, who cares?
Besides ... other species will fill their niche, like shellfish.

Why didn't he just get up and walk back to the boat?

I guess he was worried about stepping on something.
But seriously, did you know that they are looking into putting a beach down by Battery Park?

No I didn't. I used to work at the Trade Center and would walk there or to the seaport at lunch. One time a buddy of mine picked me up at the seaport and I went home by boat!
