Today is July 9th. The day Iranians have been waiting for. The next 24-72 hours may be the most important in Iran's history.

It is noon there, at the time of this post, and already we are hearing of people in the streets. The regime's security forces are out in force. This is very encouraging as most of the demonstrations thus far have been at night to take advantage of the cover of dark.

We have heard of riots in the Pars region of the city of Tehran. We have yet to hear of strikes. We are receiving phone calls from Iran but they are few. The regime is cutting off the calls to the United States as soon as they find them.

We are continuing to hear of the regime’s jamming of the broadcasts in much of Iran and Europe. But apparently the signals do get through from time to time.

The people of Iran have chosen July 4th because four years ago, the regime brutally attacked peaceful student demonstrators while in their dorms. The result was the loss of life and liberty of hundreds of students, many of which are still unaccounted for.

Iran is a country ready for a regime change. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a country. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary.

It is 6.07 PM, Tehran 9th of July.2003
Right now a Police hellicopter is over my head, They are patrolling to report any activity on the ground.
Some sources and a few friends confirmed sporadic clashes in East of Tehran in TehranPars region.
Plastic bullets were used there.
Police choppers are in the sky and one of them is in my sight.
I will have more to report later.

The other one is moving from east to south and Vice Versa at a high speed.

It is 6.26 Pm here.
2 smokes are visible from here. One in Downtown, 2nd one is in south of Tehran.
I can not say or confirm any thing about these smokes.
Hellicopter is over my head again.
I am at a friend's house, I was on the rooftop of his home a few seconds ago. I am 3 miles away from the last clash sites.
That is all for now, I will try to give more on this till I can. I expect something for night. Darkness is better.

Rock and a hard place.

So much has been invested in the July 9th date for large scale protests that in the event the government keeps a lid on things - there'll be another five or ten years of status quo in Iran.

If the protests turn to violent confrontation, the protesters will have come through but at cost to them. The world might then take note and possibly take action.

If the protests turn into scattered arrests followed by silence, the cost will come over years.

Meanwhile, the world will go on its merry way until something breaks along the Iran - Iraq border or until the next 9/11.

The Afganistan taliban were criminals waiving a religious banner. Iraq was a secular dictatorship waiving a religious banner when it suited them. Iran is the original successful fundamentalist state (Saudi was more overtly conciliatory & therefore considered OK) and its continued ability to promote that orthidoxy puts us all at risk.

The purpose will not be to overthrow the Iranian government -- that is beyond U.S. capabilities.

What a blatantly false statement!

Instead, it will be designed to persuade Iranian leaders -- including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei -- that some form of cooperation with the United States over issues that matter to the Americans is in their interest, and could result in something that the Iranians have longed dreamed of: a Shiite-dominated Iraq.

Tyrants can never be "persuaded." When will they ever learn?

And to offer the Ayatollah domination of Iraq...well if that isn't immoral, I don't know what is.

Iraq will be a pluralistic society, no domination by a specific group. The shiits are about 60 %, but they come in different flavours and they are literally on each others throat.

Take into consideration the time it has taken for the former communist countries to form political parties, it is still not parties but groupings around charismatic figures with changing alliances.
