U.S. Launches Operation to Stop Child Predators

18 minutes ago Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Deborah Charles

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday will launch an operation to help protect children from pornographers, child prostitution rings, Internet predators and human traffickers, officials said.

The initiative will use the Internet more effectively to track sex offenders who prey on young people and build a central base of child pornography images to help rescue the children involved and arrest those who exploit them.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge will announce "Operation Predator," which will be run by the department's Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Officials said the aim was to identify child predators, prosecute them and force them out of the country if they are foreigners subject to deportation.

The bureau has created a single web portal that provides the public and law enforcement with a single Internet address to access databases of registered U.S. sex offenders.

It will create the nation's first comprehensive system of child pornography images. The secure National Child Victim Identification System is designed to help police around the world identify and rescue children featured in the images and crack down on those who make and distribute the material.

The bureau has already begun to crack down on offenders. In a week-long action ending on June 30, its agents arrested 89 foreigners who had been convicted of sex offenses but had avoided deportation efforts.

Separately, since March 1, 2003, its investigations into suspected child sex offenders have resulted in 88 arrests and 56 indictments.

This sounds a little weard.  What the heck is a "system of.... images" and how will that do anything at all?

What the heck does porn have to do with our national security? Sounds like mission creep to me.  Or just plane creapy.

Just the other day there was a post about child sex slaves and the DOJ was accused of not doing enough to fight it.

Aw-w-w, poor children, they must be protected from the internet. [sarcasm off]

Of course...of course, this initiative would never--never be used against Right-Wing Wackos, militia-members (have we forgotten how many tanks they own??), domestic terrorists, Fundamentalist Christians, tax evaders... .?

Of course not man, come to your senses! Would our government knock down doors to kidnap your children, or use tanks against people, burn down their homes, shoot them on their own property? </sarcasm>

I don't know which one of you needs to have thier ass kicked first.

Do either of you even know what you are saying? I doubt it.

Just say something anti government, and people will like you, right? I'm sure you can find many kindred souls all over the internet.

Ff--150 Aw-w-w, poor children, they must be protected from the internet. [sarcasm off] You must be one f---ed up person. Child rape/exploitation dosen't usally get an aw-w-w-w [sarcasm off] from anyone.

4ConservativeJustices, tied your self to someone that thinks child porn is cool. Way to go, your anti-government stance has taken you far!

I have so much more to say to both of you, but I won't.

Yes, it is mission creep. The leap was the theory child porn is attributable to foreigners subject to deportation, and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of Homeland Security.

Anyone who argues against this is obviously more concerned about the rights of "predators" than the safety of children, so it's another one of those "for the children" catch-alls.

I know what they're saying and they're right. Unfortunately you seem to be one that thinks the national government is in the business of doing everything and anything for the 'people' they can no matter what the cause. Child pornography is wrong and should be prosecuted. At the state level. It is not the right nor responsibility of the national government to go about fixing everything that is wrong with this nation. Some things yes, but this? And to use 'Homeland' Security to do it is even more questionable. I'm sure you'll be happy to learn when they pick something else up to fight, but maybe that time it will be the right to bear arms or the right to speak out politically

And please no statist crap that it could never happen. When an government has an arm this powerful in place sooner or later it will be used in a way that more than just 1% of the population will be in danger

But the IEC get's the job?  How are they supposed to do this?  The FBI (or whatever they call themselves these days) does this kind of stuff.  I can see a LOT of wasted money going to duplicate what another agency already does.  The feds could just do the job and then ask ICE to run the paperwork to deport them.

I have so much more to say to both of you, but I won't.

I think you have pegged two stalwart Christians wrongly. The replies in question were not about supporting pedophilia, they were derivise of the nanny-state advocated.

Conservatives a quick to support programs that would be ridiculed if advocated by Hitlery or the impeached/disbarred xPOTUS. The Constitution means what is written, or it's nothing but dust. It was designed to protect US from tryrants, despots and imbeciles that otherwise could do anything they desired. Be they conservative or dims.

FF--150, myself and billbears routinely post to the daily prayer thread (which billbears steadfastly authors), and to other threads dedicated to reviving our Christian roots.

We're not anti-governemnt, we're for the government the founders intended we have, not some bloated nanny-state.

I'm sure you're a fine, upstanding person, that shares many of the same beliefs we do. I think you owe FF--150 an apology. We converse daily, on threads and off. I don't know where I would be today if I didn't have him and billbears to lean on, and theitr prayers for myself and my family. I thank God for friends like them.

I know what they're saying and they're right.

From the article: The initiative will use the Internet more effectively to track sex offenders who prey on young people and build a central base of child pornography images to help rescue the children involved and arrest those who exploit them.

Ff--150; Aw-w-w, poor children, they must be protected from the internet. [sarcasm off]

The government is not trying to be overseers of children and thier internet use. You all have turned this upside down. The Government wants to stop the adults that prey on children, by going after those that exploit children and post images of children on the internet.

Hey, if your cool with that, keep defending. Post what you have and lets see where it takes you.

Unfortunately you seem to be one that thinks the national government is in the business of doing everything and anything for the 'people' they can no matter what the cause.

Actually it's the Federal Government, but that's not my point. When the discussion is about interstate/international trafficking in child pornography then it is the Federal Governments "business".

Child pornography is wrong and should be prosecuted. At the state level.

I agree, if is done in state, from house to house, hand to hand, but not through the mail, or across the internet. Then it falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, it is no longer a singular states law that is being broken, it is federal law.

It is not the right nor responsibility of the national government to go about fixing everything that is wrong with this nation. Some things yes, but this?

See above.

And to use 'Homeland' Security to do it is even more questionable.

Well seeing how they are operating under thier direction of Immigration and Customs, you might be happy, or not to hear; During a weeklong, nationwide enforcement action ending on June 30, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)fugitive operations teams apprehended 89 foreign nationals who had been convicted of sex offenses, but had subsequently evaded law enforcement efforts to remove them from the country. In Chicago alone, ICE teams arrested 37 convicted alien sex offenders during this period.

I'm sure you'll be happy to learn when they pick something else up to fight, but maybe that time it will be the right to bear arms or the right to speak out politically.

Good move, you just tied free speach and the right to bare arms with child rape. That I would call a solid moment of idiocy.

And please no statist crap that it could never happen.

Not when this nation is filled with true blue, red blodded patriots, that know right from wrong, and understand the difference between Federal and State Law. Understand the constitution, and hold our bill of rights as the right of all men.

When an(sic) government has an arm this powerful in place sooner or later it will be used in a way that more than just 1% of the population will be in danger

Boo! Its the guv'ment!

Have a great day!

One hopes that they will mask off all but the face before showing them to the public.

I don't think I was wrong at all, Ff--150made a mockery of child rape and exploitation on the internet, and you went along with him. How should I have reacted? Oh those are just good christian boys making fun of Hillary.

Here's a clue, when it involves children, and thier sexual exploitation, that's the time to shut your mouth and think. "For whoever harms even one hair..."

Conservatives a(sic) quick to support programs that would be ridiculed if advocated by Hitlery or the impeached/disbarred xPOTUS.

I guess you didn't read the article.

Why are you against the federal government arresting sexual preditors? When they violate ferderal law?

The Constitution means what is written, or it's nothing but dust. It was designed to protect US from tryrants, despots and imbeciles that otherwise could do anything they desired. Be they conservative or dims.

Or christians.

I will not apologize to Ff--150, he doesn't deserve one from me. He said what he said, and then went behind my back to attack again. He needs to accept what he said, right or wrong.
