NEW ROME (AP) -- Onlookers cheered state officials as they took down the only traffic light in this central Ohio village known for decades as a speed trap.
"It's wonderful," said Mayor Jamie Mueller, who has been trying to improve the image of the village since becoming the first mayor elected in New Rome in more than a decade. "It's another step in the right direction."

Tisler said the village no longer is protected. And traffic stops routinely put a halt to burglaries? Hmmm... I want a traffic light, so I can better protect my possessions! :)

A city of 60 people had a police chief and a lieutenant?

They needed all those tickets to pay his salary.

I live 6 city blocks from New Rome, and I have been putting extra miles on my vehicles for 30 years to avoid this area. This is the best thing that has happened to Southwest Columbus in my entire lifetime.

LOL there is a bunch of little towns like that in Texas, too. Except you can't go around them without driving hours out of your way. It always reminds me of that toll booth that Sheriff Bart puts up to stall Hedley Lamar's Hoodlums in Blazing Saddles.

The X and I got a ticket there once, we were going 5 miles under the speed limit but the radar said 5 over. I called my attorney, he said have them move the case to the county I lived in, which would cost them time and money. Never heard from them at the hearing and paid nothing...

Give me a break. Spotsylvania County in VA has a population of 90,000 people with only 6 sheriff's deputies on duty at any given time. I'd expect that Spotsylvania County has just about as much criminal activity as New Rome does...

LOL there is a bunch of little towns like that in Texas, too. The city of Quanah, about halfway between Wichita Falls and Amarillo on Hwy 287, is infamous for its traffic ticket revenue. Speed limit drops from 70 to 55 to 45 to 35 in about a mile's distance.

He said the absence of police allowed a hot dog shop to be broken into.
The perps were captured on video, a still shot of which is shown here, and an ID is expected soon.

Yes I know of that town. There is also Cool on 180 between Weatherford and Mineral Wells which is the State Troopers favorite hangout. It goes from 70 to 60 back to 70 in a matter of a quarter mile. Hardly enough time to slow down and then pick back up. So most people don't slow down and then get busted. Of cousre there is all the notorious towns along 35 as people journey between DFW and Austin. It took my brother and his girlfriend 8 hours to drive home from San Antonio to Arlington on the Monday after Fourth of July. No wrecks, just traffic. It normally takes 3.5 hours.

I Like Traffic LightsI like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
No matter where they've been.
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
But only when they're green.
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
No matter where they've been.
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
But only when they're green.
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
That is what I said.
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
But not when they are red.
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
That is what he said.
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
He likes traffic lights,
But not when they are red.
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
I like traffic lights,
Although my name's not Bamber.
I like traffic lights,
I...oh God...
