Simon- Sec. of State has validated 900k+ Signatures, Recall a go (Dump Davis)
Hugh Hewitt Show ^ | 7/22/3

Bill Simon just announced on the Hugh Hewitt show that the Secretary of State's office have contacted his people and told them that over 900,000 signatures have been validated. This would mean that if the Sec. of State announces the certification tomorrow, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante would have 15 days to announce the special election which would be held 60-80 days after that. Candidates could have as little a 24 hours to get their paperwork in once the election date is set.

Here we go.

Odd. The Democrats are contacting Simon almost as if they want him to jump into the race for some reason...

Worse still, isn't he using the same advisor that helped him lose the last race?

After lots of compaints about Sal Russo, Simon's people started dropping hints that they'd change.

But who knows.

Why dump Davis? For every minute he's in office two new California conservatives are created. I say we take a lesson from the democrats who were caught unaware on live radio feed and let Davis remain in place. Sure, it will harm the California constituancy, but we'll gain in the end.

Everyone says that Simon was bad in the 2002 campaign. I don't see what that is based on. He seemed fine to me.

Sure, he lost, because most Californians are heavily Democrat partisans, but that doesn't mean he was a bad candidate.

Simon is absolutely pathetic as a politician. He may very well be a perfectly decent human being, but Davis ran circles around him. He can't articulate a engaging message, he spouts tired cliches, he speaking style is terrible, and he clearly picks terrible advisors (because they don't seem to get him to make any adjustments).

And to anyone who says we shouldn't worry about such superficial things as long as his ideas are good, well, you're just missing the point. Good leaders doesn't just have good ideas, they also have the ability to communicate the ideas and sell the people on the need for implementing their programs. Simon is the last person we need on the ticket.

From the Associated Press (via the UK Guardian):
Calif. Verifies Signatures in Recall Bid

Wednesday July 23, 2003 12:09 AM

By ERICA WERNER

Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis said Tuesday he did not fear a recall election, which appeared nearly certain to qualify for the ballot this week.

``If the people want me to present my credentials again, I do not fear them,'' Davis said during an appearance at an East Los Angeles health clinic.

He predicted voters would reject a recall.

``This election is not about changing governors. It's about changing direction and I am confident the voters of this state will not opt for a right-wing agenda over a progressive agenda,'' he said.

Potential candidates to replace Davis readied their campaigns knowing they may have just days to announce their candidacies. An election would likely come in late September or early October, and under state law candidates must announce at least 59 days in advance that they plan to run.

Without mentioning him by name, the governor attacked U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican who funded the recall drive and is the only declared major-party candidate to replace Davis.

``I don't think any person's personal agenda ought to be the reason to put this state through the wringer,'' Davis said, referring to the projected $30 million to $35 million cost of an election.

Jonathan Wilcox, a spokesman for Issa, said voters were entitled to an election in the fall.

``The direct democracy of this citizen action is inevitable. Gray Davis will be out and a new governor will be elected,'' Wilcox said.

Elections officials in California's 58 counties have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to finish counting 1.6 million signatures and verifying them through a random sampling. Proponents need 897,158 valid signatures to get the measure on the ballot.

If totals reported to the secretary of state's office Wednesday surpass 110 percent of the needed signatures, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley will certify that the recall has qualified. He could make the announcement as early as Thursday.

By Tuesday afternoon, Shelley's office said on its Web site that nearly 400,000 valid signatures had already been reported.

Supporters of the governor were still pursuing a court challenge to stop Shelley from certifying the recall until a hearing on their allegations that signatures were gathered illegally. No action had been taken on an appeal they filed Monday.

Besides Issa, potential GOP candidates include actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and businessman Bill Simon. Schwarzenegger was returning Tuesday from promoting ``Terminator 3'' in Europe. The actor's political advisers say they expect him to decide to run.

Simon, who ran unsuccessfully against Davis last year, has been preparing for a campaign though he hasn't announced a final decision.

A recall ballot would have two parts: Voters would vote yes or no on recalling Davis, and would then choose from a list of candidates to replace him.

I am giddy with joy! I'm so glad I didn't take my "Dump Davis" bumper sticker off of my car. I'll have to add the "RecallGrayDavis.com" sticker next to it.

Let's see...

- Failure to push the issues that resonated with California voters, such as the power crisis.

- Made an embarassment out of himself by charging that he had proof of Davis illegally raising funds when even a cursory investigation would have disproved them.

- Failed to settle a lawsuit against his company for fraud when running. I don't care about the merits, you never, ever let something like that go through.

- Waffling on issues and selling out conservatives, then trying to pass the blame when called on it (Log Cabin survey, among others)

- refusing to commit as much money as he personally said he would, leading to Davis burying the campaign with advertising.

- Refusing to release his tax returns, making it look like he had something to hide, then, after being beat on in the media for weeks, finally doing so, where it turns out that there was nothing to hide.

And that's just for starters. Bottom line: he was a terrible candidate.

"those who let us down"

Excuse me .. you're blaming Simon because there weren't enough repubs who turned out to vote ..?? Huh?

You just don't want Simon - Fine - you don't need to lie!

He got an 11 pt advantage over Dufus in San Diego County - if your county didn't come through - that's not Simon's fault.

I think there is a complaint about the cost of the progressive agenda!!!
