Of course this was also in a heavily populated area so only the pellet gun would have been applicable,

Yes...not a good idea to varmint-blast in heavily populated areas. We're on the edges of town, so we had more...um...options.

We have had to catch a couple of the critters around our
place. The last one was in the compost bin, in and
couldn't get out. We picked him up on a shovel and just
gingerly laid him over in the woods near the bin. He
just ambled on into the woods. I actually had to pour clean
water over him to clean him up he was so drenched in slimy
compost. You don't want to pick him up with your bare hands,
but they generally do what possums do, they are sluggish
and play possum and are easy to pick up on something with a
long handle.

All you need are three adult dachshunds

I saw my sons dachshund and my beagle corner a possum once and they had that critter going around in cricles, one would bite him on the rear and it would turn around and the other would nip it..

I was telling my vet about it and he said he has treated some really torn up dogs who had tangled with possums. Their claws can be deadly. Have caught some adult possums in live traps and they aren't happy. ( understatement)

I think they are ugly. All they are is an armadillo with fur.

I got tons of em around my house, they don't bother me like the feral cats. My mutt killed two juveniles in my back yard last year, I kinda felt sorry for them. They seem to be about the dumbest critter God ever gave four legs to, don't seem to like seafood (I threw a couple of shrimp over the fence), but they love pasta.

I did a bunch of reading on Google sites and it seems that these guys are quite likely to just up and leave on their own; maybe if you put some cat food out at the back of the yard during the day and kept your own animals inside, the little critter might just find it during the night and around about 2:00 in the morning you could shine a light under the house and if you don't see him or hear him then close up the hole and hope for the best.

Well, I went to Freidman's and forked over 37 bucks for a Crossman (pistol).177 (legal in Davidson County to fire). She's been handpumped 4 clacks and is loaded with the .177 and ready for some coon beehiney. Resting on my mantle in wait and handy for a quick grab. I'll be watching the back glass door to see if my white cat gets riled up and nervous watching then I'll know my guests have arrived.

I'm gonna pick out the biggest one and give him a butt sting to remember. Hopefully that will do it or at least discourage them to a minimum. If not then we move on to the extreme prejudice phase.

Squantos, I bought those CB shorts you mentioned but they are still a bit loud for my hollow unless the wind is blowing....plus they are illegal to shoot in the county unless at least 200 yards from any road/dwelling. My burg (Forest Hills) doesn't allow any shootingt which is why after I mercy killed that car injured doe (with my Jaeger) 2 years ago in front of the soccer mom posse I hauled ass.

I took my 3 year old manchild/hellion to the gunstore and let him oogle. We bought him a couple of military t-shirts. I let him watch me plink a can around and since he's too young for the range it was the first time he has seen the cause and effect of a "real" gun. He realized it was not a toy. He was wary which is good. LOL...it looks like an XP-100 all space age and all with the pump. Pretty accurate for what I need.

They had some .22 Winchesters pellet rifles with optics and 1000fps with one! pump.....wow....owner said they'd kill a coyote with a properly placed shot. Pellet rifles have come a long way since my Benjamen/Crossman/Daisy days as a boy in the 60s/70s.

Maigrey, are you in Shelby County?

I like coons too as long as they keep their distance. I have almost two acres behind me straight up the side of the hollow I live in and I hate to waste food. I usually walk up in the woods and dump it for the carnivores and even fruit for the deer and omnivores.

I just want the coons to get off my bungee strapped rubbermaids. The coyotes never get that close. They are pretty man wary around here. The possums are only uglee and don't work on the garbage cans.

The deer....hell...they think I'm a deer too. Unless it's a big buck with his genes telling him to watch me, the rest don't even run if I yell at them. Course they don't know that away from my abode at deer camp that my relationship with Bambi is far different. I like deer and I like to eat them....which reminds me...time to thaw out some tenderloin venison. We're having shrimp remoulade with rabbit food tonight. I'll need some high octane protien soon.

Regards.

LOL......sounds like a good afternoon of father-son bonding !!

As to the Agular being too loud in yer rifle ....Hmmmmmmm ?? I have one of the little 317 snub TiLite .22 revolvers I shoot and it is almost scary quiet. Had to look to see if I'd had a squib load. Gonna have to take my bag of plinkin ammo to the range tomorrow and see which one it was that I obtained such results. I may have gave ya bogus info......doom on me !

I use it to start new shooters off with. I start em with the little CB and up to hotter stinger loads. Cheap, revolver, pretty good single action trigger for being made from toy scadnium weight metal.

As to the little crosman pellet pump I have one of those on the fridge near the back door for vermin duty. I also use a wrist rocket sling shot that works quiet well. I have some fertilizer pellets that are about the size of a marble and not quiet as nasty when they encounter the lawn mower if ya catch my drift....wink ....wink !!

Well good hunting bro !! Backyard safari's are the best sometimes !

Stay Safe !

Get a Jack Russell Terrior. We have one and this is what she does best. She is our little possum killer.

A good male territorial dog with heart will destroy possums in short order.

My Jack Russell is a female but she is gay. I once told a lesbian attending a party at my home that my dog was gay. She frowned and asked me how I could tell. I threw down my gay dog's favorite tennis shoe and she mounted the shoe and went to town. This caused the lesbian party-goer to laughingly concede.

My little gay Jack Russell is the bravest little possum killer you could ever have. The possums are often close to her in size, and they have scary claws and teeth. We are so proud of our courageous little lesbionic pooch.

Jack Russells are full of heart and smart as a whip. I had a Standard Schnauzer once and he was similar of heart but not as quick. He died jogging with my dad on mile 8 in August down here...just keeled over dead as a doornail.

We have a big Red T-Rex Dobie but he spends most of the time with my widowed mom. He is fearless and very aggressive to strangers and critters...except other dogs whom he ignores.

Once when I took him to a bitch for breeding, he dismounted her to chase their cat who mistakenly thought all Dobies were like their's....the cat got lucky and climbed over the pen fence...lol

Only dog I've ever owned amongst Dobies and Rotties and Alsatians that will not lie on his back and let you rub his belly. Mega Dominant alpha male canine...I love him...he is The Boss.

Nah...you haven't lived till you've had "wet work" with a raging coon...lol

I would have preferred seriously that he and his posse had simply left my boat. I had no gun with me.

It is one tale about daddy though that my daughters will never forget....nor how after cleaving him, I felt sorry for him and jumped off the boat into the bottomless water with a flashlight in one hand and the knife in another to finish him.....and my youngest daughter screaming for me to please bring her the tail.

Now, you know you're a redneck if......

Nope. The possum is the black man. Whitey has been trying to get him away from his porch...

Ooops! *blush* Sorry, I was channeling Farakhan for a moment there...
