REDFORD, Mich. (AP) — A man listed on the U.S. Marshals Service 15 most wanted list was shot and killed in a confrontation with officials, the agency said.

Edward Mathis was fatally shot Saturday in a Redford hotel room after refusing orders from law enforcement officials to come out, according to a news release issued by the Marshals Service.

Mathis, 39, was wanted on a Drug Enforcement Administration warrant issued out of the Eastern District of New York. Federal officials say he was the triggerman in a double homicide.

He also was a co-leader and enforcer for a crack cocaine ring in Long Island, N.Y. and was wanted for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, the Marshals Service said.

Mathis was recently profiled on the TV show "America's Most Wanted." Leads generated by the show led authorities to Mathis' associates in the Detroit suburb of Redford and then to the hotel room where he was staying with a female companion, the statement said.

Law enforcement officials from several regional task forces and local police also took part in Saturday's raid. It was unclear from the statement if Mathis was shot by a federal marshal or another law enforcement official.

The release stated Mathis was confronted in a hotel room but did not elaborate on whether he had a weapon or made any aggressive action that caused officers to fire. A spokeswoman with the Marshals Service in Washington said she couldn't reveal any information that was not included in the news release.

An investigation is ongoing.

You cannot just shoot someone in this country for not coming out of a hotel room, phone booth, bathroom, or voting booth. No matter what he was wanted for, it does not warrant killing him for bolting his door and making the ski-mask boys sweat in the hot summer air. Them ninja suits are a real sweat suit in August. Makes one likely to want to mop things up before they can't keep the ski-mask on due to the heat.

Sounds like it might be another field trip outing by the JBT Class of '03 from Janet Reno University...

IOW, another summary execution -- AKA "Murder by Cop"...

With those credentials, he could be in line for mayor of Washington DC.

I agree with you. With a little therapy he could have been a real community leader. We should abolish the death penalty. (You will have to agree, though, he did get a speedy trial.)

No. He's dead now. It's going to have to be New Orleans.

Have a look at the DCGOV home page and you'll see why he'll never be Mayor.

The current mayor was appointed by former DC Mayor Marion Barry.

BUMP

Some of those boyz behind the masks are registered Democrats, people. These are people who think Gore won Florida. How do you feel about it now?

Still, provided they did get the right guy, no true loss to society, but these are probably the same jerks who storm residential home spraying bullets all over the place and realize they transposed a number on the address...

Nah, in Waco at least they were good religious people. I don't think this perp had any saving grace, never mind a commitment to God.

Probably not, but who is going to miss this perp? Find me a jury that will do anything but praise the LEOs in this example. It's just not going to happen. It's important that these perps understand that too. They can come out waiving their rights all they want, but 9 out of 10 times they're going to end up with some lead in their ass.
