Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks during a meeting with his economic advisors dubbed the "California Economic Recovery Council" in Los Angeles.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican candidate in California's recall race for governor, said he would hire an outside auditor to go through the state budget and identify potential areas to cut. He also pledged to avoid raising taxes.

It's a good start.

I don't believe him, though. I seem to remember a certain president whose middle initials were HW saying "read my lips" and then screwing us.

Fact is, the lefty bent of Arnold's other beliefs will drag his tax policy with it, and then one day he'll magically say, just like Bustamante, "California needs tough love. Here's your tax hike."

Misleading headline.

It should read, Schwarzenegger AVOIDS vow to avoid raising taxes:

Speaking at a news conference in Los Angeles, Schwarzenegger acknowledged that ``it's clear we can't ever say never'' to raising taxes.

He won't raise taxes unless he has to!

That's comforting!

I'm sure McClintock is a true conservative, which is why he should be the next Lt. Governor of California.

"He also pledged to avoid raising taxes."

What does "avoid" mean?

I'm principally against taxes. The people of California have been punished enough,'' he said. ``From the time they get up in the morning and flush the toilet, they are taxed.''

Where he has no power to do jack, while your RINO pal Arnold trashes the state further?

Here's a suggestion: let Arnold prove his political beliefs against taxes, and sponsor something like Prop. 13 for State Income Tax.

Then I'll believe him. With Tom, we know where he stands and what he believes- he tells us. Arnold dodges the questions.

Like Riordan supporters, Arnold supporters have a very bad attitude problem- "Vote for him because he can win, and shut up and sit down." Sorry, I vote for people who share my beliefs and will push my issues. Arnold doesn't, and Arnold won't. All he cares about is flushing money down the toilet. But at least it's "for the children."

Schwarzenegger Makes Statement on Prop. 13

“I am extremely pleased I will be able to draw upon the wisdom of my friend Warren Buffett and other giants on the world stage such as Secretary George Shultz not only during this campaign, but also once I become governor.

"Warren and I have talked about Proposition 13, and he clearly understands my strong unequivocal support for the initiative.

“I supported Proposition 13 25 years ago, and I support it today. Two months ago I was honored to serve as the keynote speaker at the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association Proposition 13 silver anniversary gala.

“Twenty-five years ago, the people rose up and demanded relief from outrageous property taxes. The politicians of California at that time were unresponsive to the people’s needs. Elderly Californians on fixed incomes were afraid that they could lose their homes. So the people showed the politicians who was the boss

“Today, we are involved in a recall election because we again have a governor and government who have been unresponsive to the needs of the people.

“This is the principal reason I decided to run for governor. I am calling together the brightest minds in the business, financial and investment communities from throughout this state and country to help put California’s economy back on track and to help me formulate my economic agenda.

“I expect many dynamic ideas and policy recommendations from my team. But with regards to my position on Proposition 13, my position is rock solid in support of that initiative.”

Which is why he decided to earmark $150 million for after school programs of dubious value.

Incidentally, that money doesn't get spent until California runs a surplus. In other words, Arnold says that went the state steals too much money from its citizens, it shouldn't be returned to them (tax cut), but rather wasted on socialist programs.

Thanks, but no.

"it's clear we can't ever say never" to raising taxes.

"I'm principally against taxes.

"From the time they get up in the morning and flush the toilet, they are taxed."

Beats the heck out of Bust-a-move's cod-liver-oil solution.....

I appreciate your distrust of RINO hacks and their brethren, but looking at his statement on Prop 13, are you still concerned that he will raise property taxes?

The second and third paragraphs of the article.

Speaking at a news conference in Los Angeles, Schwarzenegger acknowledged that ``it's clear we can't ever say never'' to raising taxes. ``I'm principally against taxes. The people of California have been punished enough,'' he said. ``From the time they get up in the morning and flush the toilet, they are taxed.''

Schwarzenegger said he will rely on his advisers, who include billionaire investor Warren Buffett and former secretary of state George Shultz and several Hoover Institution fellows, to help him craft a plan, but he released few details about how he will solve California's budget mess.

IOW, he will say what he has to in order to be elected, then once in office will do as he darn well pleases. I don't trust him.
