Greetings from balmy Powhatan! The weather is just too good to be true for Virginia in August and is perfect for FReeping leftists.
CRITICAL BIKE MASS, MONROE PARK, FRIDAY, JULY 25TH. I went to this event as an observer to assess it for future FReeps. The purpose of the bike ride is to raise the public's awareness of the benefits of riding bicycles by riding in a mass and slowing traffic.
They started an hour late. From where I sat (on a very hard stone bench on the Cathedral steps) it looked like several of them were making a series of cell phone calls. A young woman walked over to them, chatted a bit, skipped back across the street to the curb and raised her dress up to her shoulders exposing her undies which I will decline to describe, but the men lounging on a bench near me never batted an eye. Maybe this is a common occurence down there. I don't know.
They finally started off with 15 or so bike riders headed west on Main St. and due to their small numbers they could only obstruct one lane and people easily got around them. After 10 blocks or so I headed for home.
CAROL MOSELEY BRAUN FREEP, SHERATION SOUTH, MIDLOTHIAN, VA SATURDAY, AUGUST 23. This one was a lot of fun (Thanks, JOE6PAK, for the info). When I arrived at 9:45 a.m., there was no sign of security anywhere so I thought I would start on the parking lot curb by the front entrance and retreat when asked to. No one ever did and as luck would have it, by moving a few feet further down the curb, I was directly across from the very large windows of the ground floor meeting room where the Democrats heard all the speakers! It was immensely gratifying to see little faces peer out from time to time to see if I was still there. For a news report on the meeting & comments refer to this thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/969517/posts
I had two signs: "PETA ALERT! Democrats still flogging that dead horse SOCIALISM" and the "DEMOCRATS R FUNNY" sign that read: " Bad news for Carol Moseley Braun. Nigerian Dictators and foreign toy boys cannot vote in our elections".
I never got to see ex-Senator/Ambassador/Clintonista Braun but enjoyed the reaction of Democrats as they arrived for the meetings. One woman of a certain age screamed angrily, "Don't you have anything better to do with your time? Think of all the people out there you could be helping!" A couple of the men actually laughed at my signs but most of the women frowned and refused to look me in the eye.
A few people asked for an explanation of the Moseley Braun sign and I obliged, briefly explaining about her adventures in and concessions for Nigeria, noting that a woman who can be led around by the nose by Jesse Jackson's valet, had no business seeking a leadership role of any kind (or words to that effect).
A woman, who I think was an employee of the hotel, engaged me in a lively conversation. We were on opposite sides of the fence but she had a great sense of humor. She could also spout line for line, all the leftist talking points about President Bush and VP Cheney. When an AP or UP reporter (can't remember which) walked by she asked him several times to take my picture. He did not respond and kept walking.
Before I left, Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine came outside and walked past me, making me wish I had brought a sign about so-called Catholic, pro-arbortion politicians. We said hello to each other and that was that. He'll definitely get FReeped by Flora when he runs for Governor.
Stayed about 2 hours and headed for home.
PROTEST OF THE OCCUPATIONS OF IRAQ & PALESTINE (TRANSLATION: ANTI-AMERICA, ANTI-ISRAEL) FREEP, MONROE PARK, SUNDAY, AUGUST 24.
(Note to self: Never attempt another FReep after eating Sunday dinner at the home of an Italian cook.)
I gotta tell ya folks, the McDonald's are thoroughly disgusted with the news coverage in Iraq and the relentless efforts to make our President, our Military and our Country the bad guys.
Mr. McDonald and I found a spot on the corner of Belvidere and Main across the street from the park, that was backed by a fence and proceeded to hang an American flag, a Marine Corp flag, a We Support the Troops flag, military recruiting posters and every pro-troops, pro-America sign we could lay our hands on. We also put up two signs that said, "Caution! Red Diaper Doper Babies In the Park!"
We had the boom box blasting a medley of rousing tunes from Toby Keith, Darryl Worley, Shirley Caesar, Tina Turner and others. The music kept me company when Mr. McDonald left for what he claimed was a church committment but I suspect the Italian dinner had something to do with it.
There was a HUGE police presence, so no worries there. A rather agitated long-haired man, wearing a VEGAN teeshirt approached us. We had seen him walking with a large, obscene protest sign as we drove to the park earlier. He wanted us to know (I don't know why) that he disagreed with the protestors' complaints about Bush being in the war for oil. He knew the truth. Bush was a puppet of the Jews and they were behind the war in Iraq. The Jews are preparing the way for the Anti-Christ.
A young person, let's call him Tattoo Boy and you'll get the picture, came over to film us. He said he was making a documentary about the anti-war movement in Richmond and would present both sides in an unbiased manner. Mmmm, sure you will. I just smiled and let him film.
It was a beautiful afternoon and many people had their windows down as they drove by. I don't think we got a single negative response as far as cursing and one-finger salutes go. Some people waved and a few honked and actually got excited as they drove by the flags.
After an hour & a half, the group across the street finished with their speakers and started the chants as they processed out of the park for their march. And as I listened to the silly-sounding voice of the young girl on the megaphone fulfilling her dream of finally, finally becoming a cheerleader, I wondered how the media would cover it.
Tonight on the local Fox Channel 35, they reported on several bloody incidents in Iraq and ended with the "Peace protest" (their term) in Monroe Park.
I left at 5:30 P.M., bought some alkaseltzer and headed for home.
Nary a peep.
Thanx for getting out there!
I'll second that!
Now thats some funky freepin!
