Imagine letting Carl Sagan loose on em!

ROTFL! I NEVER looked at it that way, before! Excellent, excellent point.

Do you use the Scientology web-screening software?

You've got a point. But that is just another way of turning attention away from that fact that the church is having illegal things done to it.

So, presenting a logical argument that the documents in question are accurate is just another way of distracting you? So you acknowledge that the documents are accurate, but you're not willing to consider the implications of what they say?

In other words, don't distract you with the facts, eh?

No kidding. He really liked that tax exempt status for religions. He figured he couldn't get a lot of people to worship Diana (Dianetics) so he changed the name to Scientology. Him and his made up words.

Will FR end up on the blocked sites list?

Could be, could be. But hey seem to be the sort that go lefty anyway, so I doubt that it'd hurt too badly. :p

You've got a point. But that is just another way of turning attention away from that fact that the church is having illegal things done to it.

Actually, the entire discussion was the fairy tale that is the OT III and other upper levels of the CO$. I only brought up the copywrite issue to prove that the Xenu story is, in fact, what is taught in Scientology. You said it wasn't true, I proved it was. And whether or not the "papers" are copywrited, the law still makes provisions for fair use. Copywrite doesn't mean secret.

So what if it is true. That doesn't change a thing, it's still illegal.

It means your "religion" is a complete joke, written by a huckster. And no, talking about Scientology isn't illegal.

But seriously, now that you see that the bad science fiction story I outlined is acutally what is taught in the upper levels of your "religion", doesn't it make you think twice about what you are doing?

They aren't the only sect that uses the word "church" when it doesn't apply to them. I think it is supposed to lend an air of credibility

No, it lends an air of tax-deductibility.

WHOOPS! I FORGOT TO MENTION!!!

Anyone who encounters the story of Xenu and the Body Thetans without having undertaken Scientology courses up to OT 2 will supposedly die from pneumonia.

cough, cough.......(oops)

Why pneumonia? Why not something exotic like SARS? Pneumonia doesn't sound "catchy" enough. (Pun intended.)

According to Hubby's papers, he was on barbiturates and drinking heavily when he came up with Xenu and the "Galactic Confederation" (geez, go figure). So just be happy he spelled "pneumonia" right.

When you cast it in that light, I am grateful for small blessings!

Well, it can be pretty distressing to see the possibility that your belief system may be a big lie. To consider what you all are saying may be true means all that he believes in will be flushed right down the toilet. What I'm concerned about is that if or when he starts asking the hard questions about Scientology, will he be forced to endure the "Introspection Rundown"? Who will be there to help him?

Just FYI, Jim Robinson has requested that we no longer post complete articles from The Onion. This is due to a request by The Onion for Free Republic to refrain from posting their articles. I do believe that the standard exceprt protocol applies here, i.e. the first couple of lines of the article, followed by a link.

I truly believe the only way he can be helped IS to ask the hard questions, see that the answers don't add up, and then run away. It is a dangerous cult. I don't think anyone on FR wants to cause him pain, but that we would rather he would THINK.

I totally agree. It's just that I would not want to go to a "minister" of their "church" thinking I could trust them with my hard questions the way I could in a true Christian church.

but that we would rather he would THINK.

That is why I pointed out the secrecy, and how strange that is for a religion.

Any legitimate religion will GIVE you, free of charge, all there is to know about their beliefs and theology. All right there up front, before you make any kind of decision.

Anybody who feels it necessary to keep their beliefs secret, is, well, hiding something.
