Cruz’s Plan to Divide and Conquer the GOP
self | September 18, 2003 | DiamondDon1

Posted on 09/18/2003 2:12:56 PM PDT by DiamondDon1

The following is but a portion of Cruz Bustamante's plan:

“McClintock” phone calls to Republicans

The phone calls that have been received by Republicans throughout the State bashing Arnold were not put out by the McClintock campaign. The end message of the pre-recorded phone call says that it was paid for by the California Republican Assembly Independent Expenditure Committee. The attack ad against Arnold Schwarzenegger was a poorly conceived attempt by the CRA to “help” Tom McClintock. Even my own wife thought she would not want to vote for McClintock because of “his” attack on Arnold.

What is important here is some “Republicans” denounced the “attack” ads against Arnold when they occurred. But somehow the issue didn’t die. And even now some suggest that we should not vote for McClintock because of ads someone else put out. This issue is a great one for Cruz Bustamante because both McClintock and Arnold are hurt here, and I believe that it is minions of Cruz keeping the animosity alive.

Indian Tribes “contribute” to McClintock

Why Indian Tribes contribute money to McClintock’s gubernatorial campaign and not to his campaign for controller? The Tribes contributed to McClintock’s campaign for two reasons. The first reason is that McClintock is against regulations and could actually help the Tribes, regulation wise. The second reason is that the Tribes really want Cruz, so they contribute to hurt Arnold. But how are the Tribes theoretically contributing? They are planning on using “independent” expenditures on ads “promoting” McClintock. Note what is happening here. Cruz and his campaign have learned well. They saw ill-conceived attempt by the CRA go awry and its aftermath. And now they are going to “promote” McClintock. Watch the ads when and if they do arrive and see if McClintock is simply put in a good light, or will the ads be in line with the Cruz campaign, and be horrible attack ads on Arnold, thereby hurting both McClintock and Arnold. Expect the latter to occur.

Women Against Arnold

Is it coincidence that suddenly women anywhere near camera crews are denouncing Arnold because he is against women? There were many premieres of his various movies where these same women were absent. Why did they not “protest” previously? One of the leaders of one of these organizations talked to John & Ken on KFI640 in Los Angeles a few days back. She asserted that Arnold has a terrible reputation with women and treated women badly. However, when asked by John & Ken what her actual complaints were she could not come up with even one. The closest she came up with was Arnold’s character in his movies sometimes treat women badly. Note that when women are interviewed they will say how Arnold treats women badly, but they will not be specific about any actual events, how convenient. And of course, these women just happen to be part of the N.O.W. which just happens to be liberal. Go figure. And does the Cruz campaign have a hand in the sudden revelation that Arnold treats women badly? I think they do.

Cruz Attack on Arnold as a Racist

When Cruz attacked Arnold based on his support of Prop 187, this was an attempt to hurt Arnold while concealing the fact that it is Cruz, not Arnold that is the racist. The facts surrounding Cruz as a racist are well known, but will be repeated here for newcomers to the discussion.

Two years ago, when addressing a group of 300 Blacks, Cruz let the “N” word fly when referring to Blacks. Immediately after the event he apologized and said he got “tongue tied” and did not mean it. After two days the matter, though disturbing on how someone in this day and age could let that word slip, was dropped by the media. In a recent debate a young Black asked the question “Since two years ago you mentioned the “N” word, if you become Governor, would you consider appointing a black to fill the Lieutenant Governor position so as to mend fences between Blacks and Hispanics?” Cruz said that first of all he “never” used the “N” word, and that people thought they heard it, so he apologized for it, even though he never said it. Cruz took his entire allotted time for his response denying he ever used the “N” word. When the young Black asked Cruz once again if he would appoint a Black to be Lieutenant Governor, Cruz said “Well I could appoint a Black or I could appoint a Latino, or a Gay or Lesbian, or an Arab. I would just appoint the most qualified individual fill the vacancy”. Note the lack of Whites and Asians is Cruz’s answer. This was not a slip that he “forgot” Whites and Asians.

In college at Fresco State, Cruz belonged to MEChA a known racist group that believes “for the race everything, for outside of the race nothing”. No matter how many times Cruz has tried to explain how the group helps student achieve, one cannot get past the fact that the group believes that “they” have the right to “Aztlan” which comprises major portion of the southwest United States. The key here is not what Cruz did in college in the 1970’s that is irrelevant. But the fact that he refuses 25 years later to denounce MEChA as racist begs one to wonder if he in he still believes in the rights of the “race” to have “Aztlan”. This was also not a slip, in that he has been asked repeatedly to denounce MEChA and what they stand for and he has refused to not only denounce them but to say anything bad about them at all.

As for Arnold, two Black body builders accused Arnold of using the “N” word, more than 25 years ago. This is not only irrelevant if he did it at all, but is almost comical in timing. Why now after so many years did these two suddenly figure that Arnold alleged use of the “N” word was offensive? To understand this better, one has to know that the use of the “N” word among Blacks is common and that in the locker room or on the competition circuit slang is thrown around like the sweat that athletes generate. If Arnold did say something in the competition setting in the 1970’s, it cannot be compared to a non-Black saying the same thing today. Note that between Blacks the term is somehow still considered acceptable “jargon”. Was Cruz somehow associated with these Blacks suddenly feeling “wronged”? He probably was, and how ironic that Cruz would bring up the racial issue.

The McClintock Can’t Win Mantra

While McClintock’s numbers are in the low to high teens depending on the poll, it is clear that the numbers have risen in the campaign. Commentators like Hugh Hewitt, John & Ken on KFI, have pushed that McClintock is a great man but he cannot win so we would be silly to vote for him. This mantra began early and continues with the election almost three weeks away. Hugh has taken the stand the McClintock absentee voters are “bleeding” votes from Arnold. This is all good “three weeks before the game quarterbacking”, but all the plans of war instantly change once the first shot is fired. If Arnold does not get enough votes on Election Day he loses. “What if” scenarios of an Election that is close, with the only if we had these votes or those votes are irrelevant. A guaranteed method for Arnold to win is that he should go out campaigning and convince enough voters to vote for him.

The Cruz campaign wants to keep the fight going for as long as possible to bring down both McClintock and Arnold. But if as some have wished, McClintock drops out watch what happens next. I will not speculate as to what charge or charges will be leveled at Arnold, but expect the worst from Cruz as you will certainly get that or worse.

Since I drifted into the “what if” in describing the “requirement” for McClintock to give up, what happens if Arnold has to drop out? If Arnold has to drop out to take care of a loved one, has a medical problem (i.e. Rudy Giuliani), he gets fed up with the process, has some charge thrown at him (you can count on that and it will happen a few days before the Election), what do we do then assuming McClintock has dropped out? The answer is we lose.

Second “what if” scenario. What if the full 9th Circuit does not overturn the three judge panel and the U.S. Supreme Court does not hear the case? Then Election Day is in March and a lot can happen between now and March. In March, would it have been a good idea for McClintock to drop out in September? I think not.

The Arnold the RINO Mantra

Certainly the RINO mantra is leveled at conservatives not wanting to give in on social issues. I am one of those conservatives. However, I know what is better and what is worse, and Arnold would be better than Cruz period. However, McClintock is better than Arnold, so I would prefer McClintock assuming he is in the race. Since I am not voting absentee, I can wait until Election Day to punch either McClintock or Arnold.

The Cruz minions have inflamed the RINO arguments with their constant attacks regarding the incredibly obvious. We already know where Arnold stands on the social issues, but the Cruz lobby is making everything worse, count on it.

Cruz and his minions have been and are continuing to add fuel to the fire between McClintock and Arnold supporters. And right now, the fire burns so brightly that we cannot see what Cruz is doing to the GOP.

Democrat Davis spent $7 million for anti-Riordan hit ads in the Republican primary. We now know that the inspiration for this Davis strategy was former President Bill Clinton, a Davis confidante. Ironically, Republican Riordan had leaned toward Democrat Clinton in his 1996 reelection campaign against Bob Dole. Indeed, a Washington Times editorial this year suggested the following scenario occurred. New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani asked Riordan for help in his U.S. Senate campaign against Hillary Clinton. (Giuliani later dropped out due to prostate cancer.) Riordan supposedly declined, pleading his closeness to the Clintons. This may well be one reason Guiliani later campaigned so vigorously for Simon against Riordan.

Clinton had urged Democrat Davis to intervene in the Republican primary with the ads to wound Riordan, not necessarily kill his candidacy. These ads exploited the already weakened Riordan, whose abysmal campaign had left him vulnerable. Thus, the hit ads had the unintended effect of creating the perfect storm for Simon. Simon beat Riordan.

My feeling is CB is not nearly the formitable candidate everyone is making him out to be.

Sure, most of the union vote will turn out for him, as will the die hard liberal constituencies. But he's not nearly as cunning & effective as Davis, and unlike the GOP the democratic faithful are demoralized & I suspect their turnout will be low.

The last time Davis was elected with just a 5 pt advantage, and conditions are far worse for the demos now.

Just IMO.

Fair:

Apparently we aren't over the infighting yet...all right here goes...

82% of the delegates at the Republican Convention seem to think that Arnold is our best shot at getting rid of Bustamante, and Arnold has a much better chance at beating Bustamante, if Tom drops out. I agree with this 82% amjority.

It is nice that the upper echelon crowd was in favor of Arnold...at the YES on RECALL rally the "grass-roots" crowd felt differently. Once again, nice facts...

Do facts offend you?

Hmmmm...do facts offend me....no. Now do we discuss Cruz or do we discuss the UNELECTABLE issue some more???

Talk to you soon!!!

First of all, I'm not as stupid as you think. I'm voting for McClintock and my vote is precious to me. I read through all the stuff and don't buy it. McClintock is a good man. Those of us who have been speaking out against Arnold are speaking out because he's been spitting in our faces (conservatives). Go, McClintock!!

I don't think DD1 is calling anyone stupid - he's just laying out the facts. A lot of us are Tom supporters that are going to wait hopefully until election time.

OK. let me try to respond directly to your post.

I think it's an excellent summary and you are completely correct, that it is indeed the Dem strategy to "divide and conquer" and you laid out very well the particulars.
We have less than 3 weeks until the election.

So now we have the choice of allowing the Dems to manipulate us, or NOT. Being aware of it, and still allowing oneselves to be used as a puppet by the Dems is not exactly a brilliant strategy for Republican victory.

We have less than 3 weeks until the election, and we have to deal with bottom line FACTS.

1. Due to California demographics, Tom has ZERO chance at beating Bustamante, even if he ran alone against Bustamante, hence this scenario would certainly give us Bustamante or Davis (people voting against the recall, because they are afraid of Cruz).

2. With 2 R candidate, Arnold may have a problem with beating Bustamante, again we'll end up with Davis or Bustamante.

3. Arnold CAN beat Bustamante, if Tom drops out and his supporters don't stay home, but vote for Arnold, the Republican, against Bustamante and Davis, who are the "real terminators of California" as Arnold said. THIS IS THE ONLY SCENARIO WITH THE MAXIMUM CHANCE OF UNSEATING DAVIS AND DEFEATING BUSTAMANTE.

Hello Bonnie J!

Right now we have the luxury of running two horses in the same race. Assuming we don't kill each other (big if) we can pick whichever horse is ahead one week out (allowing for all the dust to clear with the debate).

I am not advocating two horses in the end, only one...the one that can win...

That was on Sept 1st, since absentee ballots, which comprise 25% of the total, have been going in since Sept. 8th.

Arnold is the definite frontrunner, so why is McClintock still in the race?

Fair:

If this is about Cruz, then we should focus on defeating Cruz.

Okay...let's get started...

Since Tom has zero chance of beating Cruz, and Arnold has a good chance, then the only way to defeat Cruz, is to stop the division of the Republican party and support the Republican candidate, who can win.

As soon as we got started...wham the brakes!!! Tom can win, it may be 20:1 but he can. You zero in on keeping the divide going, keeping the UNELECTABLE issue alive. I don't see the point in it. Tom probably going on until the end, and we have to make a decision before we vote...will it be Tom or Arnold. I was trying to get some kind of concensus as to what to do when that point is reached.

My opinion is not the "way out" opinion, as I quoted, 82% of the delegates and 33 of the 34 county chairs agree.

I don't recall saying your point was way out in fact most of the "pundits" would agree with you, and I said nice facts...

Division is only good and giving a chance to Davis and Bustamante to hang onto the power and push CA into the abyss.

When you have a chance to run two horses in a race, and you can wait until the last furlong to decide which one you want, you can ride the winner to victory. I don't get the getting out early idea, the adsentees are a done deal, and if we have just one horse at the end we win.

The McClintock supporters are the ones who can't seem to see through the Davis/Bustamante strategy. You talk about the fact that they indeed try to divide the Republican party, yet you continue to promote this very division.

I am trying to stop the infighting and focus on the enemy, that is the Democrats. Did you read the article I wrote? Everywhere along the way, Cruz has a hand in this, attacking both our candidates.

Cheers!

The luxury?! You're kidding, right? How is having the vote split between two GOP candidates (400,000 absentee ballots have already been recieved) while the dims unite behind one candidate a "luxury"?

Tom has a right to stay in until the end. But what if bustamante is elected by a smaller margin than Arnold defeats Tom? Suppose the absentee ballots do make the difference. Would not the obvious conclusion be that Tom was directly responsible for the election of cruz?

Considering he has no chance in this race, I think so.

What do you think of the letters McClintock, Bustamante, Huffington and the Green guy (whatever his name) are sending, refusing to participate in the last debate if questions are pre-submitted? It's hard to believe a Republican would form an alliance like that with the real enemy. They are all targeting Arnold. Amazing to see.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/09/18/recall.boycott/

At a different debate Wednesday in Los Angeles, Bustamante asked the other participants to boycott the CBA event.

"I hope you really will take me up on my offer to have an unscripted debate outside," Bustamante said. "Leave Arnold in there with his movie-scripted answers and have the rest go outside."

A spokesman for Bustamante said the other candidates in attendance -- Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, independent Arianna Huffington and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo -- reacted positively to the idea.

According to Huffington's spokeswoman, Huffington was taking the idea seriously.

"Arianna would go for it," said Celia Alario.

A spokesman for Camejo said the candidate was considering the idea but not ruling out the CBA debate yet.

McClintock's spokesman said he, too, is considering the proposal.

"We are seriously considering alternatives, and we are going to discuss with the other candidates ways to change the nature of this CBA debate," spokesman John Feliz said.

Asked about Bustamante's idea after taping an interview with CNN's Larry King, Schwarzenegger only said he needed to hear the challenge directly.

"I haven't heard so I have to first hear it from him," Schwarzenegger said.

But on Larry King Live Wednesday night, Schwarzenegger defended only appearing in one debate.

'Just little warm-ups'
"The other things are just little warm-ups. We go for the Super Bowl of the debates," Schwarzenegger said.

Mark Powers of the California Broadcasters Association said he wasn't surprised at Bustamante's challenge. He said the format of the debate allows for long discussions on the pre-released questions, rather than quick sound bites, and claimed that Bustamante and his campaign officials might be nervous.

"They really don't care for the format," Powers said. "After they saw the questions they were scared to death."

Absentees are irrelevant, that is a done deal. The race will be decided on Election Day. Blasting Tom because you want Arnold to win is exactly the problem that we are having here. If the Arnold supporters alienate the McClintock supporters, Cruz wins. If you do not believe that then you don't need us anyhow. If you need us, we will be there, but don't push...because we push back.

Arnold is the definite frontrunner, so why is McClintock still in the race?

Thank you for the observation...as far as Tom goes he is in the race to win.
