Concord Pet Foods & Supplies had "Adopt-A-Greyhound" day recently and the response was very gratifying.
The pet food store opened its doors to Greyhound Adoptions of Florida (GAF), Northeast Chapter for four hours on a recent Saturday and six to eight of the large dogs at a time were on display with their masters/foster masters for the public to admire.
"Speck," a 5-year-old fawn-colored adopted greyhound owned by Mary and Jim Antonelli of North Wilmington, Del., graciously allowed anyone to pet him as he lay on a blanket next to his master.
"Speck changed my husband into not liking big dogs into liking some big dogs," Mary Antonelli said with a smile.
"I've always loved them," she added, saying the couple had adopted Speck last October through a rescue agency, "Make Peace With Animals."
Priscilla Cressland, also of Northern Delaware, showed "Jewel," an 8-year-old, also fawn-colored greyhound.
"This is our foster dog," she explained. "We have two others, which we ran into at the Renaissance Fair. We had always had small dogs, but these dogs are great."
Mrs. Cressland said she would probably have Jewel for six to eight weeks until she is matched up with a family that matches her personality.
She has fostered other dogs from two weeks to six months.

My wife and I adopted a greyhound 5 years ago (or should I say he adopted us?) and he has been the best, most gentle, relaxed dog that we have ever owned.
He was a former racer in Melbourne, Florida (not a terrible good one, I'm afraid) and we adopted him when he was 3 years old.
He is now Mr. "Man-about-town" in our neighborhood, and a favorite among the children in our community.
I recommend greyhound adoption highly. They are wonderful dogs.

....he has been the best, most gentle, relaxed dog that we have ever owned.Years ago, I had a racing greyhound that I raised on the farm. It was a pup when we got him, and that dog was so gentle. We trained him to herd the cattle and sheep. You just had to point to the pasture and say, "Go get 'em". He would bring them all to the barnyard for the night.
He could jump the 6' yard fence from a standstill. His favorite trick, was to stand on his hind legs and look into cars or pickups when we got visitors. There were several salsemen who refused to get out of their vehicles when he was around.

(I am ashamed the dixie chicks are from Texas!)

That is a wonderful story. They really are remarkable dogs and a blessing to have around the house.
Now that our youngest son is 18, my wife calls him our "baby"...and she means it, and he takes it literally! lol!

A neighbor of mine adopted a retired greyhound about 5 years ago, and oh my goodness, that dog is precious! Great with kids, never has an accident, calm, loveable, a real couch potato pooch.

Yes, ours is a couch potato also. And he collects stuffed animals. He never tears them apart but if they squeek he really loves that too. He is also very jealous of his toys. If you take one of his toys and play with it for a few seconds he will come and take it from you. If you do that 3 or 4 times he will finally take it back again, and then take it into another room and come back without it! LOL!

I have basenjis (an ancient breed like the greyhound), but every adopted greyhound I've met was a fine, gentle, animal. Thanks for saving one.

Pugs are so ugly they're cute! Full of personality.
