(Val) Kilmer comments rankle N.M. lawmaker (about needing to carry gun)

PECOS, N.M. (AP) -- Actor Val Kilmer has been talking about New Mexico, and one state lawmaker didn't like what he heard.

Kilmer, who has a ranch in the mountains south of Pecos, was asked about living in rural New Mexico in an interview published in a recent edition of Rolling Stone.

Kilmer told the magazine he carries a gun in his car.

"I live in the homicide capital of the Southwest," Kilmer said. "Eighty percent of the people in my county are drunk. So driving home on the highway, especially with kids, it's (carrying a gun) just a precaution."

Kilmer was also asked how he spends his time. After talking about feeding the animals and going to the watering hole, he put on a hick accent and said: "We shoot the automatic weapons at the trespassers and people a different color than us."

State Sen. Phil Griego, whose district includes Kilmer's ranch and who lives nearby, said Friday that if the actor doesn't like San Miguel County he's welcome to leave.

"He's shooting from the hip and he's espousing stuff he really doesn't know anything about," Griego said.

The lawmaker said the actor lives behind a gate and doesn't know his community.

A call to Kilmer's agent requesting an explanation of the actor's remarks was not returned.

John Hendry of the state tourism department said Kilmer actually loves New Mexico and its people.

"I don't believe for a minute he meant any of it. I know him and I have a feeling that you had to be there" to understand Kilmer's perhaps sardonic intent, Hendry said.

I read hick accent as a Southern accent.

Kilmer should know better than to put on the press or democratic politicians. None of them have a sense of humor..... or a clue.

A simple test to determine whether a person is a Conservative or a liberal...If this show up on the national news...he's a Conservative.

Ha, yeah that was his other personality talking. He sounds like he's just full of love for the people of New Mexico. Why is there always someone around to make excuses for celebrities when they open their mouths and make fools out of themselves?

"I read hick accent as a Southern accent."

My grandmother lived all of her 95 years near the Wyoming - Montana border. Her father was born in Utah, and his father was born in Indiana.

She had a very distinct accent. Call it rural west, or whatever you wish. Some folks who might meet her WOULD call it "hick."

She never set foot in the south.

Kilmer: "Eighty percent of the people in my county are drunk."

"Including myself!", he added.

Then don't expect Brokaw, Rather and Jennings to lead with this story.

This is the same Val Kilmer who played the voice of Moses in Prince of Egypt? The same Val Kilmer who eschewed Hollywood to live in the Southwest? The same Val Kilmer who packs a gun? Doesn't sound like a left wing jerk to me -- sounds like a good American, with a bit of Indian blood (Cherokee if I recall). Maybe he was tainted by his Julliard experience, but who wouldn't be?

I've been wondering what he's been doing lately. He hasn't made any movies in ages has he?

From what I understand from a friend in NM, Kilmer is correct. The friend, who lives in Las Vegas, NM, notes that homicides are very common in the area. Mexican drug gangs killing each other like it was legal, and leaving dismembered corpses in the woods to show they mean business.

As I type this, the friend, owner of a Log home company, has allowed his on-site employees to come to work with sidearms because of threats from recently-fired employee accused of stealing $60,000 worth of sawmill equipment.

He has asked for police assistance. The local sherriff's office is reluctant to act because, as they told him, they fear being sued for racial profiling, and the commander of the local state police barracks had to be ordered to act by the Commander of the NM State Police.

The friend was approached by other employees last week who told him the ex worker is connected with organized crime elements in the Mexican Mafia, and is planning to burn his mill to the ground whenever the opportunity presents itself.

To that end, his employees have volunteered to stand night watch at the company, armed with SKS rifles and guard dogs until the matter is resolved.

It is certainly a sad state of affairs when a business owner who walks from his office to his car at night has to carry a 45 auto and a Rossi 12 ga double bbl Coach Gun.

Maybe if the police weren't hamstrung with fears of being labeled racial profilers, they could do their job.
