Iraq rejects Turkish troops

Iraq's US-backed Governing Council unanimously rejects the sending of Turkish troops to the country, council member Mahmud Othman said today.
"The council is unanimous in issuing a communique against the sending of Turkish forces to Iraq. It is the wrong thing to do. It does not add to security. It is not useful," said Othman, whose Kurdish ethnic group has a long history of bad blood with the Turks.
"This is our (the council's) position and it is unanimous."
Othman added that, in principle, the council was "against the sending of troops from any neighbouring country".
He said the communique would be issued by the council, but might be delayed by the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority.
Contacted by AFP, the council's spokesman Muhannad Abdul Jabar said there was no communique so far.
Othman's comments came after Turkey's cabinet voted yesterday in favour of sending troops to Iraq to join American forces in keeping the peace.
Turkish MPs today began debating the government motion behind closed doors and were expected to take a vote later today.

Makes sense, given the history.

I'm guessing this wasn't part of the grand master plan...

This will be a good test of the amount of power the Governing Council truly wields.

Sounds fair. Iraq might then allow Israeli troops to peacekeep.

I have trouble believing that this caught the US by surprise. If so, we're not doing a very good job of working with the Council.
Now, the question is whether we will invite Turkish troops in, anyway.

This will be a good test of the amount of power the Governing Council truly wields. Yeah, I figuared they were just puppets of the US administration, but they also condemed Isreal's bombing of Syria.
Maybe they're still puppets just tring to get some credibility from their populace. I'd like to think some of them are thinking ahead to those first elections.

The Turks will come in. Turkish parliament didn't vote on this for nothing. Until the Iraqis are ready to take responsibility for their own country they will have to dance to our tune.

For a long time we have been saying we don't need additional troops. Still the left insisted we did. It might be a nice time to "defer to the will of the Iraqi people" and ask for financial support rather than military support.

You are probably right. Our little brown brothers need to be "protected." So much for "democracy" in Iraq.

The important thing down the road is that the representatives will reflect the populace that:
1. hates Jews and Irael
2. hates Christians
3. hates the US
4. fears Iran and will want big army to fight her when we leave - an army equipped with WMD so they can do like they did last time Iran and IRaq warred
We will leave us when we go the same population that gave rise to Saddam and his crew. We cannot change the hearts and minds that gave rise to Saddam. The population of this nation and so many is steeped in ideologies and a religion that that makes democracy as we know it impossible.
Our best solution is to prepare IRaq and the American people for the fact that we will maintain for the foreseeable future a military base in Iraq - preferably up north where the Kurds near Syria.
The IRaqis will be given their freedom to govern their whole country except for that part we occupy and they will be free to get their army back together but realize that at any point they try to kick us out of there we will destroy that army as we did this one.
The only thing America can do now is setup a fortress Americana here and elsewhere - with smart weapons ready to defend our troops there.
American soldiers who join the US military must know from now on they join not to get an education but to defend America and her liberty here and around the world.
Isn't this is the last of the crusades? Islam either is defeated this time or it will prevail in Europe and then America. It is not a Chrisian crusdade against infidels but a crusade against any religion that seeks world dominance by force of arms. No religion can be permitted to exist that has as its goal the destruction by force if necessary of all other peoples of other religions. Such a religion must be crushed and the people who will not let it go will be destroyed or they will be the destroyers.

Why can't they help cover border patrols at the least? Keep those SYrians and Iranian Terrorists out of Iraq?

The Turks know how to deal with the kurdish PKK terrorists. It would be a pitty if we don't let them join war on global terrorism.
