There was a young lady from Niger
Who smiled as she rode on the tiger
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger
New up date
Timmy the hippie had long hair
And he tried to make friends with a bear
The results of the kinship
Was the end of the friendship
When Timmy ended up in the bear

If the girl was the first killed, I would suspect Timmy as smart as he seemed to be, was singing to the bear, "Sing for Your Supper".

Tell me it wasn't a 9mm.From the Remington ballistics table:
9mm Parabellum muzzle energy is approx 350 ftlbs x 11 rounds = 3850 ftlbs.
40 S&W muzzle energy is approx 450 ftlbs x 11 rounds = 4950 ftlbs
45 Auto muzzle energy is approx 450 ftlbs x 11 rounds = 4950 ftlbs
3" 12 ga rifled slug muzzle energy = 3000 ftlbs.
Assuming the bears never had experience with hunters or firearms discharge they probably thought all humans were cute and tasty just like the two greens thay just ate. Once the warden began firing his handgun at point blank range, the bear probably didn't associate the noise and shock with the nearby humans.
As shown above, the accumulated energy delivered by 11 rounds of even 9mm at point blank range is pretty significant. Of course having colleagues nearby armed with shotguns probably gave the warden a measure of reassurance as well.

In the mid 80's there was a camp attacked by a grizzly in Yellowstone park I beleive. One of the young ladies could not get out of her sleeping bag when the zipper jammed. The rest of the party got into trees and had to listen to the bear tear her apart. One of the last things she screamed was, "My God, he's torn my arm off".
There was a movie out named "The Edge" which was about three men being stalked by a grizzly after their plane crashed. It is very, very realistic and worth seeing. It is not like the "Cujo" movies where people are to stupid to outsmart a rabid dog. "The Edge" is well worth seeing and I think gives a good insite as to the way bears really behave.

You are mistaken. Alaska has different regulations than the lower 48 parks. It is perfectly legal to carry fire arms in the coastal parks in Alaska. (not sure about Denali) This individual (the deceased) chose to interact with the bear population without the aid of any self defense protection, including bear spray. Not real smart!

...What transpired in the hours after the phone call is unknown. The Kodiak pilot who arrived at the Treadwell camp the next day was met by a charging brown bear. The bear forced the pilot for Andrew Airways back to his floatplane.
He was most fortunate to escape...once a bear tastes human blood....

I love nature and consider myself a conservationist. I am also aware it's NATURE RED IN TOOTH AND CLAW and Ursus arctos horribilis have big ass teeth and claws. I was at the 'Big E' last month and they had live bears on display. Suffice it to say being a couple of yards from a 9 foot high 500 pound monster was enough to earn my fearful respect!

One of the young ladies could not get out of her sleeping bag when the zipper jammed... One of the last things she screamed was, "My God, he's torn my arm off". Did she sue the zipper manufacturer?
By the way... the common designation for fruitcake morons like the deceased Commufornia hippies, is "Bambiist". Coined by the inimitable Jeff Cooper, it designates a particular form of eco-fruitcake which believes that wild animals are just like Walt Disney portrays them.
There was an incident a lot like this in Africa a few years back, where a "bambiist photographer", to quote Cooper, was videotaped stalking quietly up to a lion which he wanted to pet. He touched the lion, and the lion obligingly ate him, right on camera.

He was experienced, the article plainly states that.
Bad things can happen to very experienced people in any situation. Its what Readers Digest stories are made of.
