RUSH has a STRONG personality....if he WANTS to overcome this, he WILL.....Prayers for him and HIS family. As for you no longer being a fan.....don't let the door hit ya on the way out, Mr. Perfect.

Now, what I wonder is whether those who are expressing sympathy and support for Rush today will extend the same sympathy and support for everyone else who is fighting with an opiate addiction.

A snowball has a better chance in hell than that. A year after this episode FReepers will be asking to extend the WOD and locking up people trying to get off of drugs.

From today's show, I can't help but feel that Rush reached down deep inside himself and mustered every ounce of strength to outlast recall-week just to avoid detracting CA voters from their problems (the real issue) and helping Davis.

Of this, I am convinced.

Rush is aware that he isn't just helping himself; he has plenty of money. If he wanted to, he could have retired today.

He didn't.

Instead, he promised to take a hard path, i.e. the hard path to recovery. He promised to come back to the EIB mike in a month -- something that he doesn't have to do.

If he keeps his promise to return, we, his loyal audience, must return as well.

He choses to do this "not because [it] is easy, but because [it] is hard!"

Bravo, Rush! We're with you!

Is Rush any different than a crack head on the Lower East Side or a junkie in Hell's Kitchen?

Yes, he has A LOT more money than they do. He's probably more intelligent than most of them, but most likely not all. He has one thing in common with them - an addictive personality.

This remindes me of all the Bennet threads. Why do people assume that people that are in the public eye are perfect?

Who assumed that?

Yet, those who are idealists will run around, using the Rush story as yet another example of the hypocrisy of the right and of Christians.

I find it sad that it is those on the right doing it.

It seems the treatment this time is superior (but more public) to the other treatments.

One more possibility, he is in extreme pain. Opiates are not addictive to and can be tolerated in high doses by those who are in great pain.

The Admin Mod stupidly pulled several threads til he realized Rush admitted he did have a real problem. There's a lesson here for Admin Mod to STOP pulling threads whenever there's something unpleasant happening to someone we very much admire and look up to. The DU Mod censors offending posts to avoid dealing with reality. We shouldn't be doing that on FR. If there's something people don't agree with, it should be debated openly and honestly still we get a consensus. As a conservative, I refuse to be silenced just cause some people do speak ill of us. And hey Admin Mod, the best response to attacks on conservatives is MORE free speech. That being said, all the best and love to Rush and his lovely wife Marta from conservatives across the fruited plain.

Many people that I admire hold views on things like drugs that I find incomprehensible.

The founding fathers would have laughed at the notion of outlawing medicinal substances..

We still live in the age of prohibition... it is like a warped religion. I don't think it is the proper role of government to protect us from ourselves... no alcohol, no fat food, no recreational drugs, no motorcycle riding without a helmet...etc etc ad infinitum.

This headlong rush to make all human frailties a crime is so misguided... now car accidents are routinely looked at as crimes requiring jail time...this is bizarre!
The current story about 2 rich young guys driving around in a Ferrari at 80mph is a case in point... a wreck occurs and now the survivor is probably going to jail :-(

I don't like living in a world where 2 young rich guys are at risk of a long jail term for driving a bit fast in a Ferrari...

Land of the free indeed :-/

Rush is in my prayers... I hope that he is alright... this revelation about his problems may have saved his life...

Yep, I only take Naproxin Sodium (Alleve) only when I REALLY am in pain.

I feel for you, I really do, and for Rush too. Back pain is something else. When I had my second baby I mysteriously threw mine out, and within 24 hours I couldn't move a muscle below the waist without experiencing the most excruciating pain of my life. I couldn't move, hold my baby, or anything, and had to finally use a walker for a couple of months. In short it was sheer hell.

Rush has all my prayers and all my support. I know most of our FReepers will be praying for him too. What he has to go through will not be a picnic.

Who besides you said anything about the War On Some Drugs?

Don't be so coy. You pinged the WOD list. You have never tried to insult my intelligence. Don't start now, ok?

I wonder if the maid cashing in on the story gives others in the public eye the jitters. They've been gunning for our side forever, so the next big tell all story will most likely be about a liberal.

He can't beat this in a way Cathryn.

I have a friend who went exactly what Rush went through.

He through several doctors got up to over 20 vicodin a day.

The doctors ended up reducing his addiction as best they could by only allowing so many pills a week each prescription.

This friend is in constant agonizing pain and even took a train one week to go to Mexico to buy drugs there and bring them back due to the pain.
He is even thinking of becoming a Libertarian (joke).

This is nothing like the Bennet situation at all.

The pain of a failed back surgery will be with him throughout his life.

He will either be in agony or addicted to pills with limited meds allowed.

There is no win-win here for Rush at all.
