ISHPEMING -- The public is to blame for the death of a cow moose in Ishpeming. That's what Ishpeming Police Chief Jim Bjorne is saying. An officer for the Department of Natural Resources, on Bjorne's orders, shot the moose late Monday afternoon. It all started around 8:30 Monday morning, when the moose was spotted around 600 Vine Street in the City of Ishpeming. Watch TV6 video that was taken around 10 am. Bjorne says the public's interference, in their efforts to see the moose and get pictures, prevented the police and DNR biologists from getting the cow moose and her...

When it comes to artistic carving and sculpting at the Indiana State Fair there is no doubt who is considered the big cheese. It’s the Cheese Lady, Sarah Kaufmann, creator of her third giant cheese sculpture masterpiece. The sculpture is commissioned by the American Dairy Association of Indiana and Monday a large crowd witnessed the 2nd unveiling of the new State Fair covered bridge. This one though, is 2,000 pounds of cheese. “When I did the bridge, I was carving the bridge, making the windows,” Sarah told us. “People were intrigued. But when I started doing the Gouda cows that...

As of this moment, the state of affairs between Israel and the Arabs is discouraging from the Israeli standpoint and encouraging from the Arab point of view. Everything appears to have been reversed: If in the past Israel relied on its wiles and the Arabs fell for its ruses, now the relationship has been turned upside down, as so often happens in life. Again and again, we encounter this reversal of roles. Once, unable to deal with the superiority of Israel's cunning, the Arabs were sustained by delusions or waited for miracles. Now the situation is topsy-turvy: The Arabs rely...

Growing up in Manitowoc, WI, Sarah Kaufmann's favorite pastime was drawing. She didn't care what she was drawing, as long as she had a pencil or crayon and some paper. At the time, Kaufmann had no idea those countless hours spent filling sketchbooks would one day help her become a famous sculptor. Most sculptors use stone, metal or wood for their creations. Kaufmann, however, has chosen a medium much closer to the heart of Wisconsin. She's made quite a name for herself chipping away at cheese. Yes, Sarah "The Cheese Lady" Kaufmann is a cheese sculptor. Kaufmann was at Sam's...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A sculpture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence made from a one-tonne block of cheddar cheese glistened on the sidewalk of Times Square in New York on Thursday as an artist's tribute to the Fourth of July. "It's very patriotic, using the signing of the Declaration of Independence, bringing Americans together for the Fourth," said Troy Landwehr, who carved the sculpture for cracker company Cheez-It to celebrate U.S. Independence Day. He worked eight hours a day for a week in a 40-degree cooler carving the block of Wisconsin cheddar. "The cheddar has been pasteurized...

A rare form of tuberculosis caused by illegal, unpasteurized dairy products, including the popular queso fresco cheese, is rising among Hispanic immigrants in Southern California and raising fears about a resurgence of a strain all but eradicated in the U.S. Cases of the Mycobacterium bovis strain of TB have increased in San Diego county, particularly among children who drink or eat dairy foods made from the milk of infected cattle, a study in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases shows. But the germ can infect anyone who eats contaminated fresh cheeses sold by street vendors, smuggled across the Mexican border or...

Researchers have found a potentially deadly strain of tuberculosis infection spreading through Latino communities in Southern California and suspect the disease is being imported from Mexico in unpasteurized cheese. Health officials in Orange County, though, say they have not seen any cases of the rare strain of tuberculosis in at least five years. They credit a long-running campaign to educate people about the dangers of eating unlabeled cheese and other dairy products. Tuberculosis is an infection of the lungs that kills nearly 2 million people worldwide every year. The strain of tuberculosis that researchers found in San Diego County is...

Public health experts are cautioning people not to consume unpasteurized milk and cheese from Mexico after a new study found that those products have caused hundreds of individuals – mostly Latinos – to become sick over the years with a hardy form of tuberculosis. Their warning is part of county government's ongoing efforts to discourage consumers from buying queso fresco, or “fresh cheese,” and other unpasteurized dairy items from unlicensed street vendors and shops not certified by health regulators. Between 1994 and 2005, the county's Tuberculosis Control Program reported 3,291 cases of active infection. About 8 percent of those patients...

Cheeseheads don't need to be bleu: Experts say predictions that California will soon overtake Wisconsin as the nation's top cheese producer are unlikely to come true. The Golden State and its happy cows gained quickly on Wisconsin in the past decade, but plants in California are maxing out, while efforts to boost production in Wisconsin are paying off, said Dick Groves, longtime owner of the Madison-based trade publication, Cheese Reporter. Groves helped spark the friendly competition between the states 10 years ago with an editorial predicting California would overtake Wisconsin in cheese production by 2005. He later amended it to...

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why. For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed. Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express...

I'm looking for a thread. I'm sure it's a pretty old thread. It's very special to me. It reminds me of better times on this site. I'm not sure of the name. the name really isn't very important. I don't even remember the topic of the thread either. Maybe this last clue will help. It's the last thread I read in which there were no posts whining about immigration. Yeah that's going to be a tough one I know. Maybe somebody has it bookmarked.

PARIS (Reuters) - French former film star Brigitte Bardot went on trial on Tuesday for insulting Muslims, the fifth time she has faced the charge of "inciting racial hatred" over her controversial remarks about Islam and its followers. Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand the 73-year-old former sex symbol a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros ($23,760) for saying the Muslim community was "destroying our country and imposing its acts." Since retiring from the film industry in the 1970s, Bardot has become a prominent animal rights activist but she has also courted controversy by denouncing Muslim...

Buzzwinkle, entangled in holiday lights, stares into space in this November 2007 photo. He was recently euthanized. ANCHORAGE–A well-known Anchorage moose has been euthanized. State wildlife biologist Rick Sinnott said he shot the aging bull moose known as Buzzwinkle after finding it in distress in a neighbourhood lot. The moose, who was at least 13 years old, was severely emaciated and unable to get up. Sinnott said it had badly worn teeth and an infected wound on his rump. Buzzwinkle got its antlers tangled in a rope swing in a resident's yard in 2004 and was darted and tagged....

Feta Cheese Made From Raw Milk Has Natural Anti-food-poisoning Properties ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2008) — Eating Feta cheese made from raw milk in small seaside tavernas when you are on holiday in Greece could be a good way to combat food poisoning, according to researchers speaking April 3, 2008 at the Society for General Microbiology's 162nd meeting being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. "We were able to isolate lactic acid bacteria found in raw sheep milk from small farms in Macedonia, northern Greece. Several of these friendly bacteria naturally produce antibiotics that killed off dangerous food-poisoning bacteria like...

Researchers report that cheese from yaks could be healthier than cheese from dairy cattle. When compared to cheddar cheese, yak cheese contained higher levels of several healthful fatty acids. Credit: Courtesy of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration In a finding likely to get cheese lovers talking, researchers in Nepal and Canada report that yak cheese contains higher levels of heart-healthy fats than cheese from dairy cattle, and may be healthier. Their study is scheduled for the March 12 issue of ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Producers make the cheese from the milk of yaks. Those long-haired humped...

A French woman is facing embezzlement charges for ruining thousands of South American peasants by persuading them to produce "magic cheese", which she insisted would be sold for a massive profit to the French cosmetics industry. Gilbertte Van Erpe, 67, was arrested last week in Nice after nearly two years on the run. Police allege she made between £11 million and £13 million by persuading 5,000 Chileans and 25,000 Peruvians to invest their savings into what they believed was miraculous "cheese paste". "Madame Gil", as she is known, talked her unwitting victims into parting with £260 to buy a cheese-making...

We've seen the highway signs that warn of falling rocks, and we've seen the ones that warn of moose crossing. Now Howard Peterson of the Alaska State Troopers wonders if we need a new sign: Watch for falling moose. A swing-shift trooper based in Girdwood, Peterson was cruising the Seward Highway the night of Feb. 2 a couple miles north of McHugh Creek when something big and black fell from the sky, landing about 20 feet from his car. "Falling rock!" he thought, ready to steer clear if it bounced onto the highway. When the rock didn't roll or shatter,...

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a consumer warning and recall of possibly contaminated Grassy Meadows Dairy Co. cheeses. Routine surveillance by the Indiana Board of Animal Health's Dairy Division revealed high levels of staphylococcus aureus in several raw milk cheeses manufactured by the Howe, Ind., dairy. Because of the facility's location, the FDA said consumers in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana should also check their refrigerators for the recalled items. Products of concern include, but are not limited to, Colby (lot no. 210317 and 19177), Jalapeno natural cheese (lot no. 2617, 21017 and 11017), "Homemade" cheese (lot no....

A Pardeeville man was issued a citation for disorderly conduct Wednesday after allegedly forcing his 7-year-old son to wear a Green Bay Packers jersey during the divisional playoff game last weekend. Matthew Kowald, 36, pleaded no contest Wednesday to disorderly conduct after he was released from the Columbia County Jail. He received a fine of $186. Columbia County District Attorney Jane Kohlwey said there was not enough evidence against Kowald to support felony charges. The Columbia County Sheriff's Department said the boy refused to wear a Packers jersey during the Green Bay game against Seattle, so Kowald restrained him with...

Hazing would precede "last resort" action of removal An adult cow moose damaged machines operated by two separate groups of snowmobilers on Dec. 29 just below "Fiberglass Hill," in the Canyon Creek area northeast of Whitefish Mountain Resort. "She kicked a snowmobile, and the hood (of the snowmobile) was stuck on the leg of the moose," Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesperson John Fraley said. Shortly after the group left, two...

Boy, after scanning some FR threads over the past few days, there are a LOT of candidates actually running for the GOP nomination! Some I had never even heard of. But I'm glad I did, so I got everyone straight. But here's what I think happens today in Iowa: I think Precious Willard wins tight over Hucksterbee, with McQueeg third. RuPaul could surprise and finish fourth, even ahead of Dead Thompson, with Julieannie next, a bit ahead of Duncan Heinz. I like Cheese. :)

MADISON, Wis.—Mention Wisconsin and the average person thinks of the Green Bay Packers, cheese and cold weather. Some state lawmakers and the Department of Tourism want to change that image. They're trying to come up with a new state brand to explain why Wisconsin is a good place to visit, live and do business. "We are the Green Bay Packers. We are a great agricultural state. We are America's Dairyland," said Rep. Steve Wieckert, R-Appleton. "But we are more than that." An Assembly committee is expected to vote Thursday on Wieckert's plan to require the Department of Administration to study...

TyraTech is going to try to send me a glass of a drink they are working on for a taste test. Earlier this year at Luc Salsedo, a charming little restaurant in the old city of Nice, our glasses of excellent Crozes-Hermitage 2004 were still about half full. Christine Salsedo, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Luc, the chef, suggested cheese. The selection included a St.-Marcellin, one of my favorites. “Do you have any white wines by the glass?” I asked, and ordered a Château Trians, a Coteaux Varois, from the region. Christine Salsedo seemed somewhat surprised. “Most of the time people drink red with cheese,” she said. “We’re French, so we definitely prefer red.” Ever since I was taught,...

This is the kind of story that you know can't be made up, it's just too bizarre. And it's in Norwegian (http://www.nettavisen.no/innenriks/article1453635.ece) so I'll just have to take it at face value. Here's the basic rundown: The boy and his sister were taking a shortcut through the woods on the way home from school when they came upon a moose who got aggressive. The kid started shouting to distract the moose while his sister ran away and when faced with a very irate and very large mammal did what he had done many times before while playing his Hunter in...

Officials in northern Sweden have just given the all-clear for the construction of the world's largest elk, or moose as the animal is known in North America. Perched on top of a mountain, the 45-metre (148-foot) elk will double as a restaurant and concert hall that can seat up to 350 guests. From its antlers, more than 500 metres above sea level, visitors will be able to enjoy the spectacular view over the valleys below. For over three years, officials from two northern counties have discussed the implications of having a gigantic elk straddling their border from its vantage point...

If you'd been wondering to yourself, 'is there anywhere I can go in the world to wonder around inside a giant elk, and maybe grab a bite to eat?' then you may be in luck. Local officials in Sweden have just granted permission for the construction of a giant architectural moose, which will act as a concert hall and restaurant, entered via the moose's mouth. The elk building will stand nearly 150ft high. English language Swedish news site The Local reports that the elk, which is to be built on the Vithatten mountain in northern Sweden, has finally been given...

Low doses of freeze-dried grape powder inhibit genes linked to the development of sporadic colorectal cancer, University of California, Irvine cancer researchers found. The study suggests that a diet rich in grapes may help prevent the third most common form of cancer, one that kills more than a half a million people worldwide each year. Around 7 percent of all Americans develop colon cancer during their lifetimes. Led by Dr. Randall Holcombe, director of clinical research at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UC Irvine, the study followed up on previous in vitro studies showing that resveratrol, a...

I was recently reminded to share this tale with you after a friend told me he was going to give me a sizable chunk of moose meat for my freezer. The late Officer Connor died a number of years ago, but his misadventures afield have lived on. Connor was a retired Chicago police officer who marched to his own tune back in the 1950s and early '60s. He and my father were always fishing and hunting together. Connor had saved enough dollars so he could go moose hunting in Maine. He figured that by staying in the good old U.S.,...

SPEAKING AS a guy who grew up on Velveeta and Stroehmann's, it comes as a bit of a surprise that American cheese these days means more than just petroleum-based yellow stuff wrapped in cellophane. Indeed, I think Jeffrey Roberts was compelled to name his book, "The Atlas of American Artisan Cheese" (Chelsea Green Publishing, $35), just so a yutz like me wouldn't think he'd devoted his life's work to the wonders of Kraft Monterey Jack. It turns out, American cheese makers are now holding their own against even les fromageries of France. From ripe brie to moldy blue, they're producing...

While we are still coping with the outrage over Muslim cab drivers, primarily at the Minneapolis International Airport, refusing to accept passengers carrying items and products forbidden by the Koran (wine, pork……….and canine pets or guide dogs), news broke on July 25th informing the public that cheese is now suspect.
