Dear Save Our License Friend: Thank you. Thank you for your hard work, financial help and continued support of the Save Our License Initiative. This past five months, thousands of individuals throughout our great state have spent countless hours collecting signatures and have donated their hard-earned money in an effort to qualify the initiative. We have spent the past two weeks counting and verifying signatures, and it is our duty to report that our current effort to qualify the Save Our License Initiative has fallen short. Because of your hard work and financial sacrifice, we spent almost $200,000 on paid...

SACRAMENTO – Ignored by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and short on cash, a grass-roots Republican group yesterday abandoned an initiative campaign to bar illegal immigrants from obtaining driver licenses and other public benefits. The broader debate over illegal immigration, however, is certain to continue to play out in Washington, where President Bush is pushing new federal policies, and in California, where Schwarzenegger is tangling with Latino activists over driver licenses. With a Tuesday deadline looming, campaign leaders counting signatures realized they were as many as 150,000 short of the number needed to qualify the measure for the ballot. The daunting challenge...

An initiative that would bar undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver's licenses and most public services failed to qualify for the ballot. The "Save Our State Initiative" fell about 115,000 short of the 598,105 needed to qualify for the November ballot, organizers said Monday. The initiative never got the support and funding it needed from the Republican leaders. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger never took a position on it. Republicans were hurt at the polls for their support of a similar initiative in 1994. Proposition 187 was approved by 60 percent of voters but it was challenged in court and never took effect....

"This is the final weekend and now is the time for everyone to increase efforts and work harder than ever to Stop Gil Cedillo and his bills that cheapen and devalue the legal process millions of immigrant Americans have abided by. There is only one way to do this, sacrifice just a few more hours over the next few days to help qualify the Save Our State/New Prop 187 petition for the Nov. ballot... All petitions must be postmarked and in the mail by April 26, 2004, and received by April 27th. However, any envelope containing large quantities of petitions...

Whatever happened with the Save187 petition drive? I sent in three completed petitions prior to leaving for the U.K.. I went to check the www.save187.com webpage, and it no longer exists. The April 15th deadline is past. The last time the webpage was up, they had 430,000 signatures.

State Latino boycott planned EFFORT: Activists push a bill giving undocumented immigrants the chance to get driver licenses. Pro-immigrant activists from Ontario announced plans Monday for another statewide La-tino economic boycott while local opponents of illegal immigration rushed to collect more signatures for a ballot initiative. The competing efforts this week underscore the polarization over the issue of giving driver licenses and other public benefits to undocumented immigrants. Both sides hope to influence Sacramento, where immigrant driver license bill S.B. 1160 remains stalled while the governor and the bill's sponsor investigate options to address national security and insurance concerns, a...

Heading for the Finish LineRon Prince, sponsor of the Save Our State (SOS) Initiative, and an author of the original Proposition 187, has been hitting the talk radio circuit the past few days to garner support and solicit signatures to qualify an Initiative Consititutional Amendment for the November 2004 ballot. Andy Ramirez, SOS Media Director, and a prior Democrat nominee for the State Assembly, has also been working the airwaves helping to get the message out. With an April 15 deadline for gathering signatures rapidly approaching, they are soliciting immediate support from Californians. Prince told KFI last night: "We need...

Organizers who a decade ago wrote Proposition 187 -- a landmark ballot measure that divided California -- are gathering signatures for a new initiative that again would attempt to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving a broad array of public services.
