It's not so much that they don't know their Bible, as it is twisting the Scripture to fit their own preconceived notions and abberant teachings. Don't forget that the Devil himself is orthodox and knows the Bible better than you or me.

Immediately, as Paul says, "Absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." When the physical body of the believer passes into death, the soul, like a banana peeling it's skin, immediately enters into the Presence of God.

Exactly, your dream was influenced by your surroundings. It's called---"suggestion". Nothing mystical there as with the dreams purported on this thread to be "prophetic", so too have they been influenced by things like the Art Bell show and other common conspiracy theories that float around the net.

Nuclear war-fighting exercises of Russia's Strategic Long-Range Aviation forces are completed, Air Force Chief of Staff Anatoly Kornukov tells Interfax. "A transition of the group from the peace to war regime and defense against air and space attacks were drilled," Interfax reports, citing military officials. "The multipurpose Tu-22m3 aircraft simulated mass [nuclear] bombing," according to the report. Tu-22m3, Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers fired missiles at ground targets. An air force spokesman says, "The missiles were launched for maximum distance and length of time with refueling in the air."
[Editor's note: The long-distance nature of this exercise indicates it was a simulated nuclear attack on the United States. A simulated attack on a more immediate threat to Russia from, say, China, would not have required the extremely long attack patterns.]
Russia's October 7 launch of an SS-19 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the U.S.-funded Baikonur space center in Kazakstan to a sea target in Kamchatka waters southwest of Alaska "provided real grounds for officially extending the lifetime of these missiles," TASS reports, citing the Strategic Rocket Forces. It was the 85th test launch of the SS-19 (Russian designation: RS-18) over the past 20 years. Ok, lets see it. Before the Advent of Christ, there was sheol, or hades in Greek, with two compartments that was the abode of the dead. The OT saints souls were in Abraham's Busom. For the believer now, there is no such holding area, so to speak. The believer immediately goes into the presence of God.
1 Corinthians 5
1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

Paul is clear, there are only two options for the believer. Either in the body or present with the Lord, nothing inbetween.
Well, this isn't quite what Paul is saying. He doesn't say, "hey, its either/or," here. Rather, he is stressing the role concupescience plays in keeping us from walking fully with Christ while still on this earth. You see, if your interpretation is correct (and I would submit that it isn't) then St. Paul, and, by extension, the Holy Spirit wasted a bit of precious scriptural space when St. Paul in 2 Timothy says the following:
6 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiph'orus, for he often refreshed me; he was not ashamed of my chains, 1:17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me eagerly and found me-- 1:18 may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day--and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus.
Clearly, St. Paul is praying for a dead man, here. Just as clearly, if, as you say, one either walks this earth or is present with the Lord, then St. Paul is contradicting himself by asking for the Lord's mercy for one who either is with the Lord or never will be with the Lord.

No, Paul is speaking in ontological terms, amking a clear distinction that the believer, while physically alive is in the physical body, but when that physical body dies, is then present with the Lord.

No, Paul is not praying for a dead man.
I understand your problem. It is vitally important for your theology that prayers for the dead be of no effect. Thus, even when Scripture and the Holy Spirit tell you they may be, you must deny them. What else, after all, could the phrase, "may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day" be, other than a prayer?
Interestingly, you don't even attempt to say. Your 'traditions of men' say prayers for the dead are of no effect so it simply cannot be the case that 'may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day' is a prayer for the dead, right?
Of course, if its not a prayer, then we apparently have St. Paul using the Lord's name in vain. Is that what you would have us believe? Are your 'traditions of men' so important?
