Excommunication for a wager? Perhaps in 1591 security was such that these wagers could influence the conclave.

One Sunday there was a family in front of me where both parents (who looked fortyish) were totally unable to get any cooperation from their about-three-year-old son. Both parents had backpacks full of goodies for him. I imagined they were both career people and their son had their measure, more than they had his, because he was probably spending most of his time in some sort of child care.
Well, in a fit of exasperation, I said a prayer to my aunt, who was a nun for 71 years, and my grandmother, her mother (both of whom I believe are in heaven) to intercede for this family and help the boy to behave.
My aunt was a teacher and beloved school principal. My grandmother was the mother of 10 who loved all children and her Dear Lord.
Almost instantly, the boy laid down on the pew bench and took a nap! I do believe that I witnessed a sign from heaven!
No matter who's elected. There's nothing to worry about. The Holy Spirit will pick the Pope we need... ack! God give me strength, let it be a conservative...
You're worried about Schönborn? Is it because he descends from aristocracy? Because he's Austrian? I'm curious.

Ratzinger is the obvious choice, and in my lifetime the obvious choice never wins. So Arinze might have a good chance.

I read a thread here on FR about something Arinze said that gave me pause. It was about attaining Heaven WITHOUT going through Christ. He said it was indeed "expressly" possible. He mentioned people of other faiths he knows who he thought would gain Heaven on their deaths. Now, I'll grant you that those who have not heard the Word are judged without it and may of course attain salvation. But the people he mentioned have no doubt heard the Word and rejected it to follow their respective faiths. It's a shame to, as I was a huge Arinze supporter for quite some time. Now, I'm a Ratzinger man. Mind you, Arinze would be a good pope, no doubt, but his comments saddened me quite a bit.
I don't think influence was the problem, or wagers on duration and new cardinals would not also have been outlawed. I know how radically pragmatic you are, but do please consider that the pope may have had a theological motive. To make sport of the Holy Spirit's providential action in the election or lifespan of the vicar of Christ amounts to blasphemy.
