Gay Activists Welcomed in LA, Not in St. Paul or Chicago
Catholic World News ^

May. 16 (CWNews.com) - Homosexual activists of the Rainbow Sash movement were denied Communion in St. Paul, Minnesota, but welcomed at the cathedral in Los Angeles, during their annual Pentecost Sunday protest.

Each year, members of the Rainbow Sash movement stage major demonstrations on Pentecost Sunday, wearing their distinctive sashes to advertise their disagreement with Church teachings regarding the morality of homosexual acts. In 2004, the group had its most noteworthy confrontation in St. Paul, where Archbishop Harry Flynn administered the Eucharist to protestors wearing their sashes, over the protests of other Catholics at the cathedral. Later, in response to a query from an American journalist, Cardinal Francis Arinze (bio - news), the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, said that the protestors should not have been given Communion, since they were flaunting their rejection of Church teaching.

This year, Archbishop Flynn warned activists that they could not receive Communion if they were wearing sashes. In Chicago, Cardinal Francis George issued the same warning.

But in Los Angeles, a spokesman for Cardinal Roger Mahony issued a statement saying that members of the Rainbow Sash group would be welcomed into the cathedral. The archdiocesan statement did not directly address the question of whether protestors were welcome to receive Communion while wearing their sashes. The Rainbow Sash movement announced because of the "warm welcome" they had received from Cardinal Mahony, members chose not to wear their sashes during Mass at the cathedral there.

In Minnesota, however, the protestors pressed their point, and Father Michael Sklucazek, the celebrant for the Sunday Mass, issued a warning that those wearing sashes would not be able to receive Communion. About 100 protestors came forward nonetheless, and stood silently for several minutes, their hands outstretched, before returning to their pews as Mass ended.

I think that there's some kind of psychological deficiency in those who wish to get the Catholic Church to support homosexuality. The Catholic Church is a hierarchy, which makes its own rules from the top down. If you don't like it, get out. I'm mystified.

I toured the LA Cathedral recently. Fine acoustics. Beautiful stained glass in the columnbariam/basment. Too much pagan orientation.

Man! Sometimes I wonder how Cardinal Mahoney isn't afraid for the safety of his own soul! Millions of the faithful have been placed into his care, and he repeatedly does things to either dumb down their faith or eradicate their beliefs completely. If anybody needs prayers, this dude certainly does.

Roger has no shame.

At the Cathedral in Burke's STL, not a sash was seen. At least at the 8. I doubt that there were any at the later Masses because we didn't hear a word about it.

Oh, didn't you hear? The new Prefect of the CDF is going to take care of Mahony, after all, Archbishop Levada and Cardinal Mahony are lifelong close friends...

The point was never to receive the Sacrament; it's to provoke an embarrassing public incident.

You're right.

I happened to catch the (network) everning news tonight, (can't remember which), when they had the Rainbow-Sash crowd standing in front of a church.

They were rightfully turned away. Staged for the perfect on-camera "Kodak Moment."

I got furious when they showed a boy, around 10 years old, putting a rainbow sash around him.

I'm sorry, I'm going to say it. These witches/and other expletives will stoop lower than low to make their point.

I agree with you. Would you say that by allowing him to remain in this position with no reprimand or correction that the Pope is allowing him to endanger the souls of the faithful?

But he's "in communion with Rome". He's a prince of the Church in good standing, under no censure or penalty.

That sounds about right, that and to appear as victims of the "big bad Church".

I am a formerlib too , right here in Mpls. and you really hit on something, I don't think they are as concerned about the Body and Blood of Christ as they are obsessed with circumstances regarding their physical, not spiritual bodies, this I can only hope for the Pope's cont traditional way of the Church, the Church didn't develop out of satisfaction, it dev out of sacrifice of the early Christians. And these people can not even sacrifice anything.

OK. It's time for some disciplinary action.

and the fact they call that monstrocity a "cathederal" really is a smack in the face!

Cardinal Mahoney, tear down that cathedral!
