As the Roman Catholic Church's 20th World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, approaches, we asked young Catholics about their expectations for their church. Past World Youth Days have drawn hundreds of thousands of people to meet and share their faith. This year's festivities begin August 16, and Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate a Mass to close the gathering on August 21. Among those who plan to be in Cologne are Alex Paiva, 20, of Fall River, a senior at Boston University, and Joe Tierney, 18, of Wellesley, a graduate of Boston College High School headed to Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, this fall. The Globe Magazine invited Paiva, Tierney, and three other young Catholics - Alison Bane, 21, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, a junior at Boston College; Shatica Chinn, 16, of Mattapan, a junior at Cathedral High School; and Diana Pelaez, 15, of Dorchester, a sophomore at the Academy of the Pacific Rim - to talk about their faith and the challenges facing their church.

BANE I agree with Diana. I would love women to be priests, and I would love priests to be able to marry and have children. The church has changed but not at the same pace as the rest of society. At the same time, it's hard to reconcile longstanding traditions. I understand and appreciate the values in the church - that's why I'm a Catholic - but the question becomes how the church modernizes and how it reaches out to our generation.
Excuse me while I puke.
Consider the source of this spew. The Boston Globe is notoriously anti-Catholic.
Nothing to see here folks....move along....
These kids have a typical teenage/young person attitude that the world should accomodate them. They are young and naive and ignorant enough to believe they know what the world and the Church needs. Unfortunately much youth today place little or no value on the teachings and opinions of their elders. I don't know if these kids just do not understand, or are not being properly catechized- that if you truly love God you should be willing to serve and honor Him in any way you can- even if that means being a nun instead of a priest. Can that girl not see the selfishness and complete contradiction in her complaint about "fairness"?
Just kidding. It's gotten so I don't even read an article in the MSM about the Church. Let the young folks read them to find out what the enemy's up to. I'm too old.
Change? Does God ever change? Does the way he wants to be worshipped change? No
For those who want the Catholic church to be Protestant-just go join the Protestant church where there are many woman priests, cookies that are called the eucharist, and divorce.
For the rest of us who have the guts to stay the course, please kick these liberal wierdos who want the rest of the world to condone their sins out of our lives and church before they corrupt our children and society!
###"that's why I'm a Catholic"###
Another loser but let us pray for him anyway.

Every time I read quotes like that, I think of Psalm 42 from the Mass: "Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man..."
These liberals are always trying to drag our Church down to the nation that is not holy, to the unjust and deceitful man.
Just point me in her direction next week. I'll slap the stupid out of her and have her saying novenas by nightfall.
NYer, remember your vision of me whacking gypsy pickpockets on the head with my handbag like Aunt Esther from Sanford & Son? Well, I've decided to focus my aggression on heretics instead. Bring 'em on, baby! Let's get ready to ruummmmmmmmmmbbbble!
In my opinion, major media types have a talent for finding "sources" who uncannily agree with their (liberal) point of view. Amazing. Funny how these "kids" spout the liberal talking points. Nevermind most young Catholics are conservative and traditional. Nevermind the new generation has rejected the liberal agenda of the boomers. The young people of today stand up to fight for their country in far off places, stand up to serve their country as police, firefighters and emergency response teams. Young people of today stand up for what is right. Liberal media types should do their editorializing at the expense of their own generation.
Saints, preserve us!
I think the media goes out of it's way to find the stupidest people to interview! Boston! Boy o Boy! What is in the water there?
Anyone read the daily readings yesterday? In the 1st reading from the book of Numbers, replace the word "Moses" with "Church" and you have an accurate portrayal of the Church's situation today.
ROTFL!! You're the one in the middle, right?
