Okay ... you're all thinking it so I'll say it. He looks more like the Grinch than Santa.

Actually, I was thinking that he looks more like Emperor Palpatine...

(Not meaning that to be offensive, of course...)

Whoa - me too! Just basing that on his looks here, so no flaming response required.

Of course, if he wanted to zap Sam Jackson and throw him out of a window again, I would applaud like I did in the theatre.

Here is a much nicer picture:

Pope Benedict XVI, sporting a fur-trimmed hat in the rich red color of a Santa hat , waves to pilgrims upon his arrival in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 for his weekly general audience. The red hat with white fur trimming is known in Italian as the 'camauro.' It was popular among pontiffs in the 17th century. More recently, it was used by Pope John XXIII, who was also buried with it in 1963. (AP Photo/Alessandra Tarantino)

It must be chilly in Rome because not only is Benedict XVI waering the camauro, but he is wearing the greca (a double breasted white coat), too.

Here is a clearer image of the greca:

Pope Benedict XVI waves faithful as he arrives at Rome's Santa Maria Consolatrice Church after his first visit as pontiff to a parish church in Rome, Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005. Benedict was keeping up a tradition cherished by his predecessor John Paul II, who devoted many Sunday mornings to visiting Rome's parishes, from the affluent historic center of the city to lower-class neighborhoods on the outskirts. The heck with Santa Claus, I want Pope Benedict XVI to come to town.

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Benedict is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Benedict is coming to town
He sees you when catechizing
He knows when you're a fake
He can only teach good not bad
So be good for Jesus sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Benedict is coming to town
Benedict is coming to town

I don't know. I don't think it's really his preferred 'style'.

You might be right. By the end of his audience, he had removed the camauro.

Fr. Richard P. McBrien "What a lump of coal again!"

At first, I took this as a commentary on the 'essence' of McBrien.

He has turned into a veritable, papal fashion statement!

Nov. 23 - the double cape.

Dec. 8 - After an absence of three decades, Benedict XVI resurrected the red velvet mozzetta, with hood and ermine trim.

Dec. 17 - Benedict XVI has taken on a new, modified form of the winter mozzetta, still velvet, but no hood, and, no ermine.

In November, he began the new year with the latest from the House of Marini.

This is the cape that was made to match the santa hat he wore today! He should have worn that!

saw that at the Curt Jester and almost posted it:

What fun - especially the part "He knows when you're a fake."

Don't think much slips by that sharp eye and good heart of his...

I think it looks great!

Let's tell everyone it's a brand new synthetic fur specially developed by an order of environmentally-conscious contemplative nuns, the Greenicans or Veganmelites, now officially patented by the Gammarelli Family for exclusive use in preparing Papal Winter Wear:

GAMMARELLIPELT (TM symbol)

The label inside says: "DITTA A. GAMMARELLI. CAMAURO, PAPAL. No animals or liturgists were harmed in the making of this camauro."

It's really wonderful; I get the impression that Pope Benedict is really, really, really enjoying being Pope and commemorating, honoring, the office.

It's great to see these traditional 'uniforms', clothing pieces of Pope-dom (ha!) being worn again. A bold, new, POPE BENEDICT! He's Catholic! We're Catholic! Very Catholic!

Well, YOU'RE Catholic, anyway. I'm a Lutheran B-16 fan.
