Claims that "Sacred" art in Catholic Churches is inspired by the Devil himself Examined!

More than Low Class? Claims that "Sacred" art in Catholic Churches is inspired by the Devil himself! A new documentary, "Rape of the Soul", claims to

"explore the prevalent use of satanic, sexual, and occult and anti-Catholic images in historical and contemporary religious artwork. The film also discusses the acceptance of the artwork at the highest and most trusted levels of the Catholic Church...

..."Artists from DaVinci to Botticelli have imbedded subliminal images into their art for centuries, said Calace...In this case we found penises on crucifixes, anarchy symbols, swastikas, demonic faces and in modern works even the word 'sex' encrypted into the images."

This according to a story at World Net Daily. The website itself lack any specific facts that would make the reasonable person (ala me) believe them. The documentary appears to be from Silver Sword International, LLC, a company based out of Vancouver, Canada. A brief looksie doesn't show any links or connections to other organizations.

Before I continue this brief forray into investigative journalism please remember that World Net Daily had an editorial last year where they claimed,

“On Jan. 22, 1998, when [Pope Benedict XVI] was still a cardinal and the grand Inquisitor (yes!) of the Roman Catholic Church, he declared that their archives (4,500 large volumes) indicate a death toll of 25 million killed by the Catholic Church for being ‘heretics.’ And likely two-thirds of the original volumes are lost….”

Biases aside, the primary force behind the movie is Michael A. Calace (who claims to be Catholic, so we can exclude Jack Chick's influences from the production). He claims that while attending Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Westchester, NY he noticed his children unusually drawn to the OCP missal during Mass. Using his visual art expertise he noticed phallic symbols, demonic imagery and the sign of the beast. Look for yourself!

Can You spot the "666"?

Unfortunately, I will have to remain unmoved with my belief that bad taste more than the desire to stir up hidden lustful desires is the case of most of our bad art. To paraphrase something Russel Kirk said, the Church threw away its centuries of beauty and began building (and decorating) it's buildings in the finest architectural traditions of McDonalds.

Well, the picture that is posted on the site doesn't show up (sorry) so you'll have to look at the website itself.

You can discern the "666" but I think it seems to be more chance than anything else.

Yep. And most artists were painting with their tails, although the more brazen ones used a rear hoof to hold the brush. I knew that sooner or later it would be found.

I guess we will have to wait and see if the RCC just dismisses this as nothing more than the fantasies of certain Catholic individuals who are bent on trying to notice something that isn't there or if they end up taking the better route of engaging in serious investigatory work to see if what has been postulated is indeed true.

Concerning the RCC taking the route of engaging in serious investigation concerning this matter, I wont hold my breath. LOL.

Funny thing about all of these accusations is that even if the most brazen antiChristian sympbology and artistry were embedded within those artifices, they still would have no power over devotion to God through the simplest of faith in Christ.

What a great - and sadly true - quote.

What breaks your devotion to Christ? Is it constant? Do you have no need of repentance?

Did we just have 300 posts on this topic a day or two ago?

What happens next won't be pretty.

Hey, I went to Catholic school. Don't tell me you're bringing out Sister Mary Agnes and her ruler! That's inhumane!

Not to nit-pick, but 667 should be across the street from 666.

Unless they meet in a cul-de-sac. From which there is NO EXIT!!!!! Mwahahahahaha!!!

Oh, you might think they're good, but I've caught glimpses of your albino midget blowgun assassins. Sloppy work, I'm telling you - the Jesuits recruit better talent. I've considered taking your assassins out, but then decided such a task was beneath me. I won't stoop that low.

This is ridiculous! Post number 9, now defunct, treated this sort of nonsense with just the right degree of amused contempt. What's wrong with this place?

I am what is "wrong" with this place, ArrogantBustard.

Post 9 was pulled because it was a personal attack carried forward from another thread. The poster is welcome to rephrase and repost.

Concerning the RCC

I'm glad to see we're leaving the Eastern Catholics out of this.

In all the flurry of posts to your thread, LFC, I don't recall you responding to my last query. What about you? Have you seen the film?

A glutton for punishment, that's what YOU are, posting this thread.

On the other hand, it IS Lent. I guess I'll just go pick up my flagellum and beat myself about the head and shoulders, and then for some serious mortification, come back and read this thread some more. ;-D

Oh, I've been following that other thread, too. It's a fascinating exposition of all sorts of social and psychological pathology ... starting with the 'film' that's being flacked. I strongly suspect that this whole business (both threads) is just an attempt to drum up business for a grade-B movie ... check out the producers here. They look to my uneducated eye like a bunch of one-hit wonders trying to capitalize on Dan Brown's book.

What the hey? It's your site ... if you want to let folks muck it up, that's your problem.

If that's the 'embedded' 666 it certainly isn't very subtle, it's rather large for an embedded image.

Perhaps it is meant to be 3 flats signifying the key of E flat.

These two related articles are piñatas for the Religion Forum - which is fine as long as the posters hit the piñata and not each other.

Everyone else seems to think my post was funny. Which is what it was intended to be.

If you're going to allow the sort of dreck that's been posted about the Catholic Church in the last 48 hours, it is unrealistic to expect that those posting it will not be taken to task for their motives. And laughed at. Which is what my post did.

If someone posted a thread about Bush being under the control of a satanic society, the poster would be pilloried mercilessly, likely banned and the thread yanked. I seriously doubt that he or she would be afforded protection from "personal attacks" by the Mods and the thread labeled a "pinata".

On the contrary, the Mods would be the first in line with the flame thrower.

This sort of thing falls under the category of "baiting", in my opinion. It's ridiculous to throw up your hands in self-righteous indignation and cry "personal attack" over one reply. The whole darn thread needs to go in the dumpster.
