Bishop Pilla Gets Revenge: Ends Latin Mass at St. Rose
April 22, 2006 | Friend of Diago

A friend just e-mailed me with this very sad news:

How fitting that as one of his final acts, Bishop Pilla appointed a liberal Pastor to St. Rose of Lima parish. The new pastor's first official act was to end the Latin Mass at St. Rose effective May 14. Happy Mother's Day! St. Rose curently has four Masses, but the Latin Mass draws more people than the other three combined and has a bigger collection than the other three combined. This only makes sense as a punitive act to punish some of his most outspoken critics.

Please contact the incoming Bishop:

Bishop Richard Lennon Office and Residence: 2101 Commonwealth Av. Boston, MA 02135-3192 Phone: 617-782-2544 FAX: 617-782-8358

That's really too bad. Well, hopefully, the next bishop will be better.

Bishop Lennon takes over May 15. According to my friend, the last Latin Mass will be May 14. About a month ago, I believe Pilla appointed the leftwing pastor to take over at St. Rose, one of the two or three most traditional parishes in the Diocese of Cleveland.

I hope the faithful parishioners who favor the Latin Mass appeal to not only the new bishop but also the Ecclesia Dei Commission in Rome.

At least the petty, anti-tradition with Pilla is soon to be gone along with the financial and doctrine corruption with him. Good riddance...

Hold your prayers. This is the same Bishop Lennon that refused the FSSP in Boston. The same Bishop Lennon that told us to forget praying there was no stopping closing Holy Trinity the home of the only Indult in Boston. The good Bishop loves nothing better than closing churches. I give St. Rose of Lima less than a year before she closes.
I will pray for you though.

SPECIAL NOTICE
After much prayer, reflection, and conversation, my Franciscan brothers and I decided that the Tridentine Mass will no longer be celebrated at Saint Rose of Lima. This will begin effective May 15th, 2006. The Mother's Day First Communion liturgy will be the last Tridentine Liturgy at St. Rose's for the forseeable future. The celebration of Tridentine masses in the Diocese of Cleveland, according to the Bishop, has always been at the Pastor's discretion: no church has ever been designated officially as a Tridentine Rite church.

This difficult decision has not been made lightly, or without great consideration of the past eight years of St. Rose history. It is my hope that those who wish to remain and commit themselves to enlivening a rebirth of St. Rose will do so. Those faithful who cherish and hold dear the Tridentine Mass are most welcome at Immaculate Conception of Mary Catholic Church.

Wishing you peace and all good,

Fr. Tony Posada, O.F.M.
Fr. Bill Rooney, O.F.M.
Fr. Walter Dolan, O.F.M.

Pastoral Team - Saint Rose of Lima

Pastoral team?? Isn't that precious. Like St. John Chrysostum said - hell, Bishop's skulls, paved, etc.

No reasons given. Only this cryptic sentence:

"It is my hope that those who wish to remain and commit themselves to enlivening a rebirth of St. Rose will do so."

I think we're all familiar enough with wreck-o-vator code by now. "Re-birth" usually means the introduction of the horribly misused "spirit of Vatican II" which is inevitably the coup de gras rather than a parish re-birth. This hunch is supported by the fact that you do not have a pastor but a "pastoral team" or team ministry, to give it a popular label.

What this means in practice is weird and whacky liturgies, combined with the "social gospel".

It won't be pretty.

St. Rose of Lima has always been on the bishop's hit list. It has now been 4 years we've been without a pastor. We first lost our school, had a variety of priests saying Masses, an organist playing all the Protestant hymns, and then: a few months back, we were asked to let him know what type of pastor we would like to have. The overwhelming, if not total, vote was for a return to the traditional, with Latin Masses being specifically named.
So, perhaps a month ago we received the "good" news that we would have not one, but 3, pastors--none of whom would live in the rectory!
I went to Confession and was told by Fr. Posadas that none of my sins were, in fact, sins--only feelings. That the only 3 mortal sins were Apostasy, Adultery, and Murder. Attending Mass was not necessary.
I went to our regular Thursday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament only to see no candles. The layman who has been doing the work, gratis, had been specifically told that NO candles were to be on the Altar.
I predict the moving of the Tabernacle and the end of the Exposition any moment. We decided not to contribute to the collection; but, that will play into Pilla's hands. No money equals no keeping the church open.
Hundreds of letters would have to reach Bishop Lennon prior to his arrival in Cleveland, and I doubt that will happen. He is supposed to be the Pope's man, but we don't know if he can reinstate the Tridentine Mass. Possibly, but not for who knows how long.
They've been pushing the other church for months now. The Benedictines who've been saying the Latin Masses did not have a clue about anything. Our 3 new "pastors" are Franciscans.
Yes, indeed--Happy Mother's Day.....then what?

So what will happen now that the Pope is to greenlight a rebirth of the Latin liturgy?

I am not sure how many folks are left at St. Rose...most were driven out. St. Adelbert's in Berea may now have a Latin Mass, and perhaps St. Stephen's which was shot down by Bishop Lennon not long ago. I am sure there may be others.

But it will be interesting to see how strongly Lennon acts to discourage the young priests.
