Ousted Newton (MA) priest cheered at gay pride service

A Catholic priest preached yesterday at the main worship service associated with Boston's gay pride week, setting up a potential conflict with a church hierarchy that has been increasingly vocal in its criticism of the growing acceptance of gay relationships in Western societies.

The Rev. Walter H. Cuenin, a longtime advocate of outreach to gays and lesbians in the Catholic Church, did not criticize or dispute Catholic teaching during his remarks, and he quoted several times from a 1997 document issued by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, which declared that ``the teachings of the Church make it clear that the fundamental human rights of homosexual persons must be defended."

Organizers said they believe Cuenin is the first Catholic priest to preach at the pride service, which claims to be the longest-running such service in the country.

What we have here is... a failure, to excommunicate!

Does anyone else think it is extraordinarily low class of Brandeis University to hire as its "chaplain for Catholics" a priest who has been formally removed from his duties?

``the teachings of the Church make it clear that the fundamental human rights of homosexual persons must be defended."

Absolutely true. You have the right to sin; to believe what you wish; to believe that sin is not sin; to disbelieve the Church. And you have the right to not have the door hit you in the ass as you leave the church.

You wrote: "Of course, all liberal catholics think one of the fundamental rights gays have is raping little boys...."

Uh.... I'm not a "liberal Catholic," but I've known a whole lot of them over the years --- like, hundreds of them--- and I don't know ANY who believe it's OK to rape little boys.

Links? Documentation?

There are plenty of Catholics in Boston right now who engage in the vices of gluttony, both food and alcohol. Why doesn't he join 'em some day in the Norh End?

When I visit the North End and pig-out at some great family Italian restaurant and then waddle over to Hennesy's Pub for some Guinness,(after I have stopped for Pastry at Mike's on Hanover St) how's come the Rev. doesn't come over and preach a bit and pick-up my tab?

With all the attention directed towards the queers, why should our particular vice squads be, so to speak, left behind?

What about the rights of fatties and drunks? How's come it's only politically correct for priests to preach in favor of lust?

These are clergy whose shocking bad policies enabled and protected sexual abusers. But I didn't notice it had any endorsement from "liberal" Catholics in general. Far from it. All the Catholics I knew ---- liberal, conservative, right across the spectrum --- were appalled, disheartened, angry.

Then lets go with the liberal catholics in the liberal catholic universities like Notre Dame and Georgetown...Every year ,the liberals, catholics, feminists put on a play called the Vagina Monologues..This play glorifies the rape of a child..Now,liberals will call it seduction but it is RAPE!!!!!All those liberal catholics and their liberal friends have no problem supporting a play that says its okay to rape a child...Don't tell me that catholic liberals don't supprot the rape of children..Liberals just call it seduction, instead of rape....

You're absolutely right that anybody who supports the Vagina Monologues is a person who tolerates or romanticizes child rape. It's morally repulsive.

But --- interestingly ---none of my liberal Catholic friends liked the Vagina Monologues, either. Maybe they were a more traditional, decent type of liberal(??)
