The Votes Are In! And the Winner Is .... (USCCB meeting on revisions to the Latin liturgy)
WITL ^ | June 14, 2006 | Rocco Palmo

Believe it or not, it took no more than five minutes to debate the translation proper.

Word from the floor is that "no more than a handful" of objections were raised, most of which were eventually withdrawn... Everything was handled in 45 minutes, word is that it was relatively easy, and not a single adaptation was contested. (You can thank the return of "Christ has died" for that.)

In the name of the Committee on the Liturgy and himself, Bishop Trautman recommended that the translation be approved. And the vote was taken....

Prayers answered! Pat yourselves on the back and move on to the next objective ---- liturgical music.

Congratulations all! I never believed I would see this day ... but here it is. God bless you all!

They could save themselves a whole lot of trouble by just going back to the original Latin. No dispute about what the words mean, no translation problems, and you could understand the Mass anywhere in the world. But they threw all that away 40 years ago and here we are.

That was amazing. I was living and traveling in Europe before it changed and always felt "at home."

That, as they say, is past praying for. . . . maybe.

Our local Archbishop is very supportive of the Latin Mass.

But this is a step back in the right direction.

For the life of me I don't know how you take a treasure from God like that and throw it away. It was perfect, so of course the meddlers had to fix it.

Puhlease!!! Remember, we're operating on Vatican time :-). One step at a time, okay? Pope Benedict XVI is gradually (but steadily) moving catholics worldwide, towards the Latin text. He chants the 'Pater Noster' each Wednesday and gives his blessing in Latin.

Wars are won, one battle at a time. This small battle has been won. We now move forward. We'll get there.

I've come to think it was part of an effort to throw away history, and thngs that held people together. I really don't know if that is what they meant to do.

Benedict is no spring chicken and the next guy in could reverse it. I wish he'd just do it by fiat. Fiat Latina!

I was living and traveling in Europe before it changed and always felt "at home."

My mother worked for Scandinavian Airlines. I still recall how, at age 5, we traveled to Europe. First stop - Denmark. We attended Mass which was, of course, in Latin, and were able to follow along. Next stop was Paris and then Rome. No matter where we traveled, we were always able to follow the Latin Mass because it was, universally, spoken in Latin. Those days will soon return :-)

There were, of course, disagreements about the full meaning of a number of Latin words, and still are - always will be. Even the correct pronunciation is in question ~ with the result the Latin of Jesus' time is rendered in a variety of Italian current in Rome in the Middle Ages.

I presume these "translators" were "inspired" by the Holy Spirit to try and get the meanings straight.

It's no wonder Peter, Paul, Jesus, Mary, Mary and the rest of the Disciples and followers resorted to Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, eh?!

Not anytime soon, that's for sure.

If they can delay it in any way, they will.

I feel such a quiet sense of joy about this. I still have my missal from childhood, thumb prints and all. I am so grateful that this is happening.
