WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson says God told him a terrorist attack will result in "mass killing" in the United States in the second half of 2007.
"I'm not saying necessarily nuclear, the Lord didn't say nuclear," Robertson said on Tuesday on his television show "The 700 Club." "It'll be mass killing, possibly millions of people, major cities.
"The evil people will come after this country and there's a possibility, not a possibility, a definite certainty, that chaos is going to rule," he added.
Robertson told viewers they should not be afraid because "if you get blown up or something, you go to heaven, that's the worst thing that will happen to you."
Robertson said God conveyed this message to him during an annual prayer retreat. He said he has received other spiritual messages during past retreats.
The broadcaster's 2006 forecast of heavy storm damage in coastal areas was followed by the second-lightest hurricane season since 1995. He said his prediction was borne out by storms in New England, Denver, the Pacific Northwest and the Philippines.
God did not warn him of any natural disasters this year, he said
Robertson, 76, reaches about 1 million U.S. viewers daily on the Christian Broadcasting Network, which he founded. He is credited for helping shape political views of evangelical Christians, a vibrant force in the Republican Party, and campaigned for the presidency as a Republican in 1988.
Robertson has not shied away from controversial statements in the past.
In January 2006, he suggested that former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke because God was punishing him for dividing Israel. He also called for the assassination of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a vocal critic of President George W. Bush.
He also claims on his Web site (http://www.cbn.com/communitypublic/shake.aspx) that he can leg-press 2,000 pounds (907 kg), well above the world record, thanks to an energy shake he promotes.
I nominate Robertson to take Warren's place this year as most pilloried famous Christian.
I looked all over his site but couldn't find that he'd addressed these charges about his comments.
If true, they are truly nutty.
And, for comparision, Pat Robertson.
Pat Robertson has lost him mind. What is he thinking?
Oops. Him = his.
I say we take a vote to ban microphones and any recording devices within 1000 feet of poor ole Pat.
Him talking of heaven reminds me of Huck Finn's reaction to Miss Watson's description. "I figgered it weren't no place for me if she was gonna be there."
I have a hard time trusting millionaires who claim to be evangelists, reverends, etc.
I will grant that he is pushing 80 and shouldn't be left alone with a reporter or a microphone.
Sadly, he owns the joint and gets to continue blabbing without restraint.
Too bad.
But it does make him the ideal candidate for:
CHRISTIAN SCAPEGOAT OF 2007!
What a hunk! Be still my heart!
Prove that they are more nutty than the predictions made by the "scientists" referenced here:The Impossibility of Predictions
Grifters are grifters. Follow the money.
Yes, but we need a candidate to take Rick Warren's place as Christian Scapegoat of the Year.
Pat made his news at a fortuitous moment.
BTW, No one (around here anyway) is looking for a "Nutty Professor of the Year.")
:>)
(BTW, I will check out your link.)
I smell a false prophet.
"if you get blown up or something, you go to heaven, that's the worst thing that will happen to you."
Going to heaven is the worst thing that could happen to you?
Ummm.. Pat. Wouldn't that be the 'best' thing that could happen to you?
We all have our cross to bear. Robertson and Falwell are our conservative counterparts of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Robertson's heart is in the right place, but far to often his head isn't. he needs to be sure that his mind is in gear before he puts his mouth in motion.
Hone Land Security predicted 4 attacks this year.
He is thinking that the Lord spoke to him.

Yeah, I suspect you would have a hard time trusting anyone who claimed to be an evangelist or a reverend.
